Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone else was into the hobby of keeping this plant. It is one of the most interesting plant i have ever seen and kept and they seem pretty cool. And they require water exactly the same as wild discus. They prefer RO water or natural rain for watering and low ph peat moss with perlite. They like insects of any kind. And their temperature and stuff is the same as discus. So if you got a RO unit its just another interesting hobby u can add to ur list. Just a cup of water is good enuf for 3 plants everyday.

And the most interesting part is their dormancy period. Unlike many plants they dont die in the winter. They just wear off and go for sleep (dormancy) after november and wake up and start growing in feb again. You can put them in refrigerator for that time period if u live in hot climate area. And during their waking period they grow like crazy and get in many different color.

You can reproduce them either by sexual propagation or budding or leaf cutting. I prefer budding as its the easiest method. You can just wait until it produces a side leaf and then tear it off with its root one and re plant it. In one year active period you can atleast multiply 1 plant to 3.

And you will love feeding them and cleaning them with RO water spray. They also like burning hot sun. And amazing to show to ur guests. They can also be kept in terrarium with slugs and other american plants. I am already on a plan on making a repharium with these plants on top and wild discus in the water. As their water preference is the same, there would be no prob. Anyone else?

That sounds pretty interesting.

I have been thinking of doing a terrarium for quite awhile.
I have been seeing vft at home depot lately and almost picked one up.

I might get one.

If you know any good links or more useful info go ahead and post.

Thanks

Sameen,
I used to be very big into carnivorous plants...I propagated venus fly traps as well, and kept Pitcher plants, sundews, butterworts and bladderworts. Great hobby to have. I don't have any currently, but I have plans for a small artificial bog here and want to set it up with insect eaters again.

Though I do enjoy the venus flycatchers, my all time favorite is the thread leaves sundews....someday I would like to make the trip to Australia where they have over 2000 species of sundews.
