Hello everyone, this is my first post on the forum. I have been reading this forum for a while and I come up a question about the filter.
I am getting start to a discus tank with BB and a Marineland bio hang on back filter 350G/Hour on a 58 gallon tank. I read a lot of ppl saying use a sponge filter but I don't understand if it is necessary to have both HOB and sponge filter together? Or can I just use sponge filter alone?
Thank you in advance!

Imo use both the sponge filter & HOB filter.......in case you need to set up a new tank, you got a cycled sponge handy.....for water clarity HOB is better than a single sponge filter.....just my 2 cents.

It may not be 100% necessary to use both but I do.
The hang on filter moves water and also grows a nice bilogical filter bed.
It also provides a place to use carbon or whatever media you want or need to use.
The sponge also builds a nice bio bed and it aerates too.
Plus, the sponge filter is the trademark aquarium piece for discus keepers.

In my 75 I run a AC70, 2 ATI hydro's with Poret sponges and 2 Rocket filters.

seem like most of you use both. So do I need to do WC more often if I only use the sponge filter than just using HOB?

You will still need to do your water changes everyday for the discus. They require clean water.

I use both also..You can have too much current, but hardly ever too much filtration..And, as with most facets of keeping Discus, backup is excellent in all fields...Gary

as was mentioned every day without a HOB - I do 3 water changes per week in a 75gal. with HOB and 2 hydro IV sponges and I have no problems

Agree with the previous posts. Use both.
