I've had this brilliant turquoise for about 2 months. It had a little hith, which I treated and it doesn't appear to be getting worse. A few weeks ago I noticed a few dark spots on each side. Does this strain get peppering? The seam to come and go. Today it has a lot more dark spots then normal. I took some pics just now. I guess I stressed him from following with the camera, cause he turned his stress bars on. Some of the spots look much larger then peppering on my pb's, which concearns me.http://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5cc52-81d8-3687.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5cc52-81e9-ecfa.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5cc52-81f9-bc88.jpghttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5cc52-8213-48c4.jpg it seems like some of the larger spots u can't see when his stress bars are on though...

That is a red turquoise and will not get peppering, only pigeon strains will exhibit the peppering. Some times black marks could occur when your discus hit against the tank wall/floor or even ornaments, it will disappear when provided with quality water.

It was labled brilliant turquoise from a reputable store. I have a red turquoisehttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5cc52-8e32-2010.jpg The store has something like 600 tanks, about 20+ discus only tanks... I realize they can look a lot similar... Some with tight patterns, some with looser patterns.... It is a young fish.... But anyway, the brilliant is #2 in the pecking order, and #1 has been pecking only him... Out of a group of 6

Not sure what the black spots are from but perhaps from sctraping against something in the tank. I have seen that happen on one of mine and assumed it was injury from running into something. It went away soon after. The first picture looks like red turk to me. The second pic more like a brilliant turk. :)

second pic is the brilliant for sure. the dark spots on the red turq may be from where it's coping the flogging from the brilliant

That second pic is supposed to be red turquoise... I sent that first pic to Hans. He said it looks like a red scribble... I really don't care about what's what. There all nice looking to me... It definatly looks like peppering on the face though... Maybe a hybrid?

I agree, red scribblet (Red Turk). Turks dont develop peppering. You stated that it gets picked on by another tank mate? I would bet that the marks are from aggrression. Probably nothing to worry over.

Hi Adam,

I think you mixed 2 things up, "your" Brilliant is the red turquoise/red scribbled and "your" red turquoise is the Brilliant.

You forgot to tell me one of the others was picking on him.

In my email I said the spots look small for bite marks, but if one is picking on him and the spots come and go, I'm 99% sure they are bite marks,

Hans

He is not getting picked on bad. The #1 guy is a blue pigeons blood. He's a great #1 cause he's peaceful. #2 is the one with the odd spotting. #1 does peck #2 from time to time, but not even 10% as much as #3-6 go at it. And #3-6 have never had any funny spotting. As far as the funny spotting on #2, it really looks like peppering on his face, as far as the spots on the sides? A few are pretty large... I'm thinking this variety must have been breed with a pb at some point. I'll try and get a good pic of his face tonight. As far as the one I thought was a red turquoise, it was bought from a different store. A little lfs with great prices, and super healthy fish. I also got one labled blue turq, and red Marlboro. Those 3 fish are very healthy and growing very fast. It's funny when fish pass from breeder to lfs the names get mixed up somewhere in the progress.http://tapatalk.com/mu/ae93d61b-9cbd-de5d.jpgbrilliant turquoise

Now I don't know what is what after hearing all these replys. They all eat good and r very active. I just started keeping fish less then a year ago to be honest. I do 50% w/c every other day on this tank. I'm actually a auto tech for Honda, yet have built all kinds of domestic and import racecars. I turned a 140hp 93 Honda accord into a 620hp monster. It's actually built to handle over 1000hp. People told me I couldn't make 300hp with that motor. Lol. I did all my own head porting, and tuning. The only thing I didn't do was sleeve the block. That car proved to myself that anyone can do anything if u have knowledge, willpower, and money. Honestly for the past 4 years I started a small organic orchard and a large garden. Also had 2 beautiful girls:). But I'm sure no one really cares about me... Lol

Can I ask what type of sand/substrate you are using? Do you also use any frets under it or is it just straight sand?

Pool filter sand. Co2. Potassium, iron, and a trace mix. I've never used root tabs...

Hi Fast =)

Ok, I copied a couple of your pics so I could point out the names of the fish that I recognize. A couple are so small in the pics, and so young, that it's hard to be sure what I'm looking at cuz I'm not an expert at this stuff.

This one is a Marlboro Red

This one looks to be a Brilliant Turquoise

The first pics, the discus with the black spots, is a Red Scribbelt from the looks of him.

It also looks like you have a blue pigeon blood and possibly a blue turq, but he's too small for me to really see him in the pic.

I have no idea what the black spots are, but I don't think they look like peppering. They are very round, almost like he's hitting something and bruising himself, or getting nudged or bitten. That can happen at night when the fish jockey for sleeping positions.

http://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5de05-f24f-c6ca.jpg really u think this one is marlboro. It was labled pigeon blood.

http://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5de05-f2b0-51ab.jpgthis one was labled Marlboro. This is a pic from 2 months ago. And here's a pic of that same one nowhttp://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5de05-f32d-445f.jpg

http://tapatalk.com/mu/47f5de05-f390-3fce.jpghere's another pic of the blue turq from a month ago. It has since gotten more red in it. Even though its the smallest, its the only one that messes with the largest one, the blue pigeon.

I guess ill see what happens with the now known red scribble and its marks. I need to get a better pic of its face to show the light peppering...

Yup, the first picture in the post above me is a Marlboro Red. The store was correct in saying it was a pigeon blood since MR's are a pigeon blood strain. I have no idea what that second discus is called, maybe someone here might recognize his markings and coloration for you.

The last picture does look a lot like a blue turq but again, I'll leave it to people who have more experience with the really young guys. He's VERY pretty!

Oopsie, forgot to add a couple pictures of my Marlboro Red so you can see how they look when they're young, and what they look like as they mature. =)

67311

This is my Marlboro Red when he was 4" long

67312

And this is his color and markings now that he's almost 6".

67313

I found this pic and thought you might like to see what your Brilliant Turq will look like as he ages. My Brilliant is the discus all the way over on the left side of the tank, near the bottom of the group.

67314

And this pic has my Red Scribbelt on the left and my Red Turq on the right. They look a lot alike..just some small differences in markings and the Red Scrib has a bit more yellow as his base color.

Now we just need someone who can identify your other orange colored pigeon blood strain.

It sounds like what I'm wanting to do with my 4th tank. How do you go keeping it clean? Do you use a vacuum? Would that disturb the ferts underneath the sand?

Corydoras keep it clean and stirred up. I vacuum the upper layer of also.

Ahoy!...I can't discern the spot issue in the picture well enough for a diagnosis,but...sometimes small black spots are bacterial infections...Not that yours are, just thought I'd throw that out there...Gary
