My fry have been free swimming for two weeks. I have a sponge filter, but would like to turn my outside filtration back on as well. At what point is that safe? Should I cover the intake? If so, with what? I will be out of town for a week when they are 3 1/2 wks free swimming. Someone will come feed, but I'll really need the extra filter at that point.

I'd wait another month if it were me, and use a good pre-filter on the intake instead of the supplied strainer if you must..Why get away from the sponge???..with the amount of WC's necessary, sponge is king....Gary

I still use the sponge, but I like both. Especially when I'm not here.

I've attached a ladies' nylon stocking to the intake. It works just fine. Make sure when you are away that someone cleans the stocking daily, and does wc's daily.
