Other than aquarium heaters what do you use to heat water in aging barrel/drum?

If you use aquarium heater, what (if anything) do you use to prevent the heater from touching the plastic (for plastic barrels).

I use a 300 watt heater in my 55 gallon barrel. I drilled a hole in the center with a hole saw big enough to slide the heater in. Then I used a cable tie to hold it about center height of my barrel.

I dont use anything, its not like they can melt anything if they are touching the sides. Just let em float freely.

At one point years ago i was using a bucket heater to heat water, probably a few thousand watts, it would warm a 55 in an hour, even that thing was fine touching the sides.

some people heat the whole room.. no individual heaters...

WAYNE NG puts the heater is a piece of white styrofoam and floats it in the water.. yim11 took pics of his trip and posted them.. you can see it in the tanks

Yeah, Skip, you and I talked about it on that thread. I'm just worried about little bits of stro floating around... I guess on the barrel side, I could always filter them out before dumping the water in...

I can't heat the whole room, it's not cost effective to heat the entire basement for 4 tanks :)

okay, I've read that it can cause problems but maybe the people who did it were using super-cheap plastic or very high wattage heaters. I'm sure 300W will be fine then...

the heaters don't melt the plastic clips... just put a terra cotta pot in there and place the heater in it.. problem solved :)

ps.. use 2 if you are REALLY worried :)

I have two 300 W heaters in my 330 tote. They both rest on the bottom. No issues.

I use a hot water heating element rated 1500 watts. It's secured to the drum via an electrical locknut- because there's not alot of threads available. The HW heater terminations are covered with an "in-use" pvc box epoxied to the drum.

Here's what I use to heat it up quickly then I use a 200 watt aquarium heater to mantain the heat I also have an airstone to keep the water moving . I just let it hang from the middle of the drum.

Being old has it's disadvantages.
Forget the RO water is on overnight, big mess.
Forget a water change, unhappy or sick fish.
Forget the bucket heater is on, well, at least the house isn't on fire.

I found these on Amazon:

67912

They are 1000 watt heaters. Notice the cage, helps keep
em away from plastic. Another nice thing is it has a temperature
limit - once it goes over 105F, it cuts off, saving electricity should
you "forget". Raises my 35 gall trash bucket from 72 to 84 in about
20 minutes. Cost was about $40 + s&h.

Now all I have to do is remember to plug it in! :)
