I feel dumb but I am not afraid to ask. :antlers: anyway when a discus size was given, what was it refer to? The distance from the lips to the tail tip or ...? There must be a standard answer to this, otherwise one person's 6" discus is 5" to another. thanks for educating me!:)

it depends.. thats why you ask.. Total length is with head to tail.. standard length is head to end of body/beginning of tail..

Size is measured two ways. The first is TL which means total length, from nose to end of tail. The other is SL which is from nose to the beginning of the tail.

My largest is 6.5"TL...never measured her the other way cuz she doesn't like to hold still for me. I just put a attach a tape measure to my counter, cover it with saran wrap, pull her out of the tank, lay her on it and measure fast! LOL

Unless of course you are measuring standing eggs or bulldogs, then it is top to bottom of the body. Not a problem for me, though as I would not own them. Personally, I perfer SL.

SL is a better way of measuring length on fish with long caudal fin. EG: some angels and catfish.
BTW the definition for SL includes the caudal pedencle.

I like to simplify measuring Discus because there is the correct way which is the standard length nose to caudal peduncle and total length.
These have been explained.
I prefer to use their overall diameter as that means something to most people because Discus are circular shaped; hence their name.
