Hi Guys,
I have first been a discus fan and now altums for quite a few years, and always managed to find valuable information and browse great pictures on this forum. This month will be the 2 year mark after I first received 10 young wild altum angel, and so just wanted to share the "before/after" pics for the group. Oh and there are 3 discus swimming amongst them as well!
Cheers,
Dennis

Hi Guys,
Thank you for the nice words. I believe the base of the cone is around 3 inches in diameter, and the altums are a bit longer than that from snout to base of the tail…

They are really beautiful Dennis, shows what good care they have been given! I wish you luck in getting a spawning pair or more. Glad they like their new tank decoration!

3 questions.
What are your water parameters?
Aren't altums dorsals and anal fins usually a lot longer?
What size tank?

Jose - thanks. The season is now to get altums, just be sure to get healthy ones that have been well quarantined and acclimated, otherwise they get sick quickly and it's very difficult to treat.
Hi Jay - I have seen footages of wild altums in their natural habitat with longer finnage, and I'm not sure why it's usually shorter in captivity raised specimens…. some have attributed it to tank depth, water current, etc etc….. The tank is 110 gallons and it's 3' deep x 4' long, roughly 115 gallons. pH 6.8, hardness 40 ppm, 86F. R/O from GE Merlin, weekly 70% water change.

Hi all,
Yep, Houston Aquarium Warehouse (aka Gulfcoast Discus) has them for sale at this time and I believe the fish is very healthy. I bought mine from a guy named Toyin Ojo at Rehoboth Aquatics through Aquabid, but I don't know if he still is in the importation business.
For more altum acclimation and keeping details, check out finarama.com, forum section.

They are looking really fantastic! They look quite funny when they are young (day1 pic) because of their altum shaped beak (mouth) but as they developed it really look great! Congrats

Thanks Kevin. The altums' shapes and colors changed drastically in varying stages of growth….. and interestingly, the once biggest fish in the earlier days is now the smallest!
