I just came across this youtube video with 3 or four stingrays in a tank with Discus fish? The Stingrays are massive in comparison to the Discus... surely they must be on edge all the time right?

I have known other people keep rays and discus together. Trouble is rays are predators, if it will fit, or nearly fit, in their mouth they will eat it. Even in a 180 there really isn't enough room as in floor space, for the rays he has in that video either. Sooner or later the discus will become food imo/e. Nice rays though.

I had that setup in the early 80’s.
It was a 1000 Liter Tank with 8 Discus and 2 Rays.
It lasted only 2 weeks though. The Ray’s would hide in the sand bottom with only the eyes showing. The Discus picked the eyes out and they died:mad:
Back then we had no clue how to keep Ray’s what so ever. Seems that has changed :D

That just doesn't sound like a good combo, nope. I have had friends that kept rays and the tanks were always dirty. I guess it can be done, but why?

I think rays are ugly.

Don't get me wrong I really love the thought of having stingrays as part of a large tank... make that a massive tank... but just not with discus.

And don't the tiger shovelnose cats get huge also? Surely something in there is going to sample those discus????

There is a nice setup at the DC National Zoo with discus and rays. It's huge pond like set up. It's very cool.

I have rays and discus together right now. I have two hystrix rays with my discus and my brother has 5 rays with his wild discus. Either of us have had any problems but our rays are 8"-10" and the discus are full grown.

That tank on that video is unfit for rays, it's too small and way too crowded for rays.
Those rays have nowhere to swim.

It's just back and forth in an aisle only a few feet long, too bad for them.

Some of the discus in there look stunted to me, Probably alot of waste in there with all those large fish.

I had a baby motoro with my wild blue discus in my 240gal. As much as discus and rays are supposed to co-exist peacefully in nature, my discus were freaked out by the ray despite them being bigger than the motoro. They were very obviously spooked by the motoro, and when the motoro was eventually gone, the discus were noticeably more calm. These are wild discus that supposedly have lived with rays all their life, so I don't know why they kicked up such a fuss...but they did.

Maybe they had a bad experience when they were in the wild :)

Heiko also has rays and wild discus in his biotope tank.

I think rays are ugly.

Aren't they just discus laying on their sides? LOL!

I wanted to try a few teacup rays in my 300. The size is right and I think it would work but sadly, rays are illegal in California. :(

Doesn't a fellow member with the 1700g tank have rays in there with discus?

Here is my tank and ray. Most people that keep a lot of rays all use those small plastic kid pools. My fish pay no attention to my rays at all even during feeding. My fish and my brothers fish a very calm with the rays. I know one year I will have to upgrade my rays to something bigger for them but for now they are just fine.

That tank is sweet, that's how a ray tank should look, nothing to run into.

They need room to swim, not knocking into stuff all over the place.
