are 6 2.5" discus too small to put in a 55 gallon bare bottom tank? There will be a large piece of manzanita a bristlenose pleco and a few ottos in there too.

The issue is food; at that size in a big tank, they really have to hunt, and consequently, food goes bad, there goes the water quality,etc...It can be easily done, but a lot more work...JMO, others will have theirs...Gary

Are you asking whether the discus are too small for a 55G tank or the 55G tank is too small for 6 discus?

If a 55 is too big for 6 small discus. I was asking along the lines of what TURQ64 brought up, is the tank too big to feed them easily. Or would they be better off in a 10 or 20 gallon?

If they are going to call that tank home when they grow up, just put an eggcrate divider in it...Remove it when they're used to the layout...the 10g would be a drag, and the 20 is do-able with daily large WC's..

+1, this is what I would do. It's kind of the best of both... you restrict their movement but keep the volume (and it's cheap)

I had 15 discus 4 ins over in a 55 gallons tank during their quarantine period......lol.......they feel more secure in a tight environment.

yeah the eggcrate sounds like a plan. I'll go to home depot and see if I can find the stuff. I think they sell it as light diffusers in the commercial lighting section.

I have 19 of 2.5 discus in a 125gal. Egg crate works perfect. You slowly increase the swimming area.

yeah I bought a sheet of egg crate from home depot I'm going to split the 55 and order 6 discus from Hans. The 55 is actually heavily planted at the moment but I'm going to pull the sand and put 2 smallish planters in the corners and keep a couple pieces of drift wood in there and the bottom essentially bare with a dusting of sand.
