View Full Version : 5 out of hundreds

My discus "spawn" every 5 days or so. I once again moved the eggs so they couldn't be eaten. Looks like I might have 4 or 5 that hatched out of hundreds. The rest are all fungus. What should I look for now that I see at least something hatched?

i have read of others using methylene blue to prevent the fungus

maintain your water quality. i normally do 50% WC within 24 hrs after they laid eggs. Keep water PH and hardness same.

I maintained my water changes so the water quality should have been the same.

if they eat the eggs within 24hrs you can try artificially raising useing methylene blue and making like an egg yolk paste to feed but i cant personally suggest. Ive had a pair resently eat there eggs for about six months then all sudden raised there fry now they raise every spawn best of luck to you

Just wonder how old your pair is and how many times they have spawned so far?

Don't know the age. They were adults when I got them. They must have spawned regularly at least 10-15 times.

Do you slow down the water movement while they are spawning? I've noticed even my sponge filters move water pretty good if the spawnsite is close enough. Maybe the male doesn't get enough eggs fertilized to keep them from eating them all. I've read some people turn off the filters while fish are spawning and turn the filters back on after the fish are done. just remember to turn the filters back on.. I guess it's easier if the parent fish do most of the fry raising early on. just keep water good and everything within parameters. Mainly clean water not to hard not to soft and good temp.

It's easy to remove eggs from parents and use methylene blue to get wigglers and then free swimmers but if they don't get the first few days nursing on the parents slime coat, you can sit and watch them die. I have tried the egg yolk paste unsuccessfully. And believe me that was a lot of work just trying. I would never even attempt that again. If the parents don't raise them then be patient and let them try the next time, and the next, and the next... They will get it sooner or later. Your part in this effort is keeping their water quality good. Learn a little water science

You need lots of patience. I had a pair that spawned continously for a year and ate the eggs. Then one day they started to raise the fry and have done so since.

Think I'll set up a small tank to try the M Blue just to see if there is a better hatch.

Put that in there with the pair and their spawn. I wouldn't suggest removing the eggs from the pair.

They spawned last night. I did remove the eggs and placed them in a small tank of low ph, soft water, to see if I have the same fungus problem or get a better hatch. In other words to see if it is the water conditions or the discus.

Have you tried mesh guarded eggs and add methylene blue. I'm thinking the big swing change in ph and tds and possibly temp will affect eggs.

Tried the guard. Also tried moving the eggs into a corner so the parents couldn't get to them. Still had the fungus problem. That is why I moved the eggs this time to a very small tank with low ph and soft water. We'll see if the results are any different.

At 36 hours about 1/2 the eggs are already white. Doesn't look good.

Have you tried to reduce the current flow during spawning? if possible turn your pump off for the duration of the spawn ;)
