View Full Version : Wild F1 Cuipeau Fry Group

I had a late visitor this past Friday. Mark (Discus Origins) delivered my long awaited group of F1 Cuipeau fry and man, they are NICE. I'm in awe. Mark had a shipment to pickup from the Orlando airport and offered to bring them down with him.

Mark has been lucky to have two spawns from his Cuipeau pair and this group is from the second spawn. These fry are 100% wild and about 4 months old.

It was a true honor to actually talk to someone else about wilds and of course the first thing to correct is my mispronunciation of the places the wilds come from like Nhamunda, Tefe, Alenquer and of course Cuipeau. I have tefe correct now but need to hear others spoken again. I can not believe far off I was on Alenquer. :(

Mark stayed about a 1/2 hour and had a nice chat. I do believe he liked the 230.

On Saturday these guys were settling in nice and even coming forward for food. They were not ready for picture taking but took some anyway.

This picture is fairly true to how they look to the naked eye.

It has been two weeks today that I received these guys from Mark. They are doing great. We are getting use to each other and they have gotten comfortable as a group. I added two small pieces of DW to help cut the aggression and it seems to help. I was lazy about putting the plastic piece on the back of the glass lid and paid for that when one of the larger ones jump out the backside of the tank :( I kicked myself pretty hard when I found it on the floor. Little guy was 3.5 inches long :(.

I'm feeding Kens flake, my seafood mix and live blackworms. They by far prefer the blackworms and when I go to work I load them up on the worms and flake. The tank is clean (except for poops) when I return home.

In the first picture the one in the front is developing some interesting color.

Hi,Pat sorry to hear about losing one of your fish. I really like how your's are developing are these fro Mark's first batch or second batch. Can you remember when they hatched out, I'll have to ask Mark again if you don't remember, I like to keep reference for growth now. Jim in Ohio

I originally were going to get a group from the first spawn but Mark offered to let me get my group from the second batch as my discus house was unhealthy at the time. Thanks again for making that offer Mark.

Mark, only myself to blame the leaving the top partly open :(

Thanks Zach ;)

Hey Jim and thanks. These guys are from Mark's second spawn and best guess were 2 1/2 inches to 3 1/2 inches when Mark bought them over and are now 3 to 4 inches (three week timeframe). I'm mainly keeping them on blackworms with a side of flakes or seafood mix. I credit the blackworms for their growth. I'm working second shift ATM and feed them three small feedings between 8 am to 12 pm. Just before I leave for work I give them a good handful of the worms to keep them until I get home at 10-11pm. Then 90% WC and a small handful of worms as a bedtime snack. You know these guys are staying with me. ;)

Pat, thanks for referring me to this thread. I don't know how I missed it. Those babies are already changing their colors and growing so fast. Do you think they are growing faster than the domestics? I am sure the live worms have a lot to do with it. It still makes me wonder how much is nature vs. nurture. The parents are absolutely gorgeous! You are going to have a tank full of beautiful fish very soon. I think this is a great excuse for another larger tank. As they say, "bigger is better".

Anik, I have no idea on the growth rate as these are my first batch of juvies. They have grown a full inch in five weeks I have had them and agree that live worms have a lot to do with the growth rate. I do withhold the worms when feeding other foods as I do not want them being black worm elitists.

Yep. They eat better than I do. In addition to the blackworms, they get tetra color bits, sera discus, NLS, BH flakes, frozen daphnia, plankton, bloodworms, ON flakes.
You are right. It is easy to get stuck on the blackworms. It has to be great watching them search the sand. Some of mine do that also, but not to the extent that I am sure the wilds do. Mine will get lazy and position themselves in front of the spray bar and let the food come to them. Smart little buggers.

Yup Jim and hate them but they do eat uneaten food so perhaps helps to maintain water quality between WCs. My guess on the spots of color popping out is this is the formation of striations, starting out is spots of colors and growing into each other as the fish mature. Turks mature this way...right?

I am so impressed! They appear to be bigger and rounder than in the pictures. They seem to already have that grace of mature fish. You can see where they are doing a little pushing and shoving.
You must go through a serious amount of CBW!

Thanks Anik, I tried to show each fish in the video. I had to wait for them to be hungry so they wouldn't shy from the light while taking the video. I go through a 1/2 pound a week which is mostly for the juvies. Now the Cuipeua's adults are getting some to acclimate them to other foods and deliver meds for deworming and debugging.

Here are some more awful pictures. These guys are eating the frozen blackworms, flake and started eating Ken's earthworm sticks. The sticks make a mess of the tank and cloud the water. All this guys are about 6 months old and I would say some are over 4 inches and some are a little under. Some great color forming too.

The video is a bit more clear and shows their color better.

Pat - you may be taking your pictures from a little too close. Try backing off 6 or 8 inches next time around and see if that doesn't clear up your shots. The fish are looking good in the video though. What's laying on the bottom of the tank that sort of looks like streams of tan?

Hi Pat,

As I said I would, I read the entire thread from post #1 and I have to say that the progress these guys are making is something truly spectacular. The growth rate is very good, I must admit I didn't expect them to perform like this. The latest pictures you posted of them convinced me eventually. Credit to you for all you've achieved so far.

I have been sitting here for about five minutes since the full stop of the previous sentence tying really hard to think of something to say what I would have done different. Then I looked at these pics again above and thought: nothing.
I don't normally keep my opinion to myself, never been famous for it, but no matter how hard I try I can't find anything to criticise. Well, maybe the picture taking technique could be improved a litte with new angles, proper white balance setting and a 20$ tripod off of ebay, but this is really it.
How about getting 6 more of them? ;)

Like a lot Darrell, have not idea why these suckers are growing so fast. Must be the water. Aren't wilds, even F1s suppose to be slow growing

The right combo of good genes, clean water, and good food would be my guess.

Well you see Tara, found this box but the front door and lo and behold, found these little F1 wilds. Today, not so little. Now which one was yours ;)

Thanks Anik.

See I annoy my fish so much that they pack up and leave town. :D
They are starting to get alot of red to them arent they Pat. Is the one in the beggining of the video (top right) breathing a bit heavier out of that right gill?

Yup, been that way a while. Do not recall it coming that way however. Perhaps a late developing defect?

Tonight I finally moved the F1 Cuipeua to a 75 from the 40 breeder. Seemed like their growth has slowed. As I caught them, I measured them prior to moving them. Holy cow, they were all over 5 inches and the royal almost 6. :D

Of course, you are going to post some pictures once they are settled in. Right?

I have not posted pictures of these guys in forever. They are all over five inches and currently reside in a 75. I added a little sand to the tank and sort of washed these fish out a little color wise. They are 10 months old I believe.

Not a great video but shows some of the color development. The red wild is a Curua from Rod and Bob. You can see the Cuipeua have some growing still to do. They are not to sure of the ipad.

Give them time. They will be swans eventually. I think they look great and are showing lots of interesting colors.

Ok, time to "fuss up". I made the awful comment to see if anyone was "paying attention". I see that you are and thanks. Honestly I am tickled pink with these guys and they are coloring up nicely.
