I picked up a San Mareh Juvie tonight, i'll get a photo tomorrow once he's settled in the Q tank. Just curious how many of you have one?

I guess it's not a real one then. The pics i've seen of some adults have stress bars. Maybe i'm confused as to what an adult San Mareh looks like.

I'm not sure those in your pics are San Merahs. Where did you get them?

Hendri is correct. A San Merah should not have stress bars.

Jim, I picked it up at the Fish Gallery. In the tank up there are blue diamonds, San Mareh, & checkerboard. When I picked it up it was more brownish red on the body and was only showing the eye stress bar.

Hmm Hendri, that's not what I thought a San Merah looked like either. I didn't think they had white faces.

They might just have them mislabeled, not uncommon for a LFS IMO. Should be interesting to see what it grows to be. If you know Tony well enough might want to mention it to him...

I'll let Tony know. There are other in the tank that look more like the pic hedut posted.
I thought San Merah looked like these.

Excellent pics Jim.

Maybe it's just the maturity of the fish Hendri, I don't know. Variation in the strain? The fish in Jim's second picture in the back looks somewhat like the one's Mike is showing.

My understanding is that San Merah are brown base basically the same as a Red Cover. Jim's pics look like San Merah to me.

A real Red Cover should be barless also. The may be Rose Reds.

From the goolge images pics it does seem to look like a rose red. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I'll post updated pics every couple weeks so you all can see how it grows.

Imo San Merah brown base discus and no stress bars from head to tail.......Red Cover golden base discus also should have no stress bars from head to tail.......throwbacks with stress bars are commonly call Rose Reds.

Before buying Red Covers I tried to do as much research as possible. I was trying to find San Merah's without any luck. Both Kenny and Mike Beals suggested I look at Red Covers because they were basically the same fish. Everything I could find on them showed them as a brown base. Here is a link you might find interesting showing what pairing produced what. Red Covers are listed as brown here also. http://www.philippinediscus.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=859. I ended up getting 4 from Lucky Tropical and they are indeed brown base.

I stand corrected; for giggles, I went and startled the living daylight's out of the tank the RR's are in..they do have faint barring, they've just never stressed out around here....

hi Larry.......I like red discus and did my research too ......Ah San created the San Merah strain when he crossed 2 wild browns(Ica)...............RGDs (Ung Seng Lip) golden base very popular here.............then Kok Eng with his 3R also golden base(loved them) .........and Waynečs (Hong Kong) 3R2( I thnk is also golden base) very nice discus too........Red Cover should be golden base too.........buying red discus and agreed with you must find out the actual source to play safe.

Well there is a real problem here and that is because I believe your research and I believe mine. To me it is unfortunate that we have such a name game in the discus world. Golden based Red Cover and Brown based Red Cover..............JMO but they shouldn't have the same name but do. It can be very confusing. Add to it that there is so little information available when you do want to do research and find the origins of strains. I realize that it all boils down to money but it can be very frustrating.

Totally agree with u Larry........these days all those discus farms trying to improve the red discus and hard to tell ..............as Martin Ng book discus cataloque may be outdated by now.

Id have to agree that there are tons of cross Breeds out there being labeled one thing and being another. I didn't think this thread would have sparked such an interesting and informative conversation. So I guess in a way
I'm kinda glad my little fish wasn't what I thought it was.

It would fall into the category of better lucky than good. I love digital camers. Snap a dozen pictures, get a half dozen good ones, and a unique one once in a while. I've got a three generations shot somewhere I thing is really cool. I'll have to see if I can find it.

I'm aware its not a San Mareh, I'm just gonna keep doing updates so we can all see what it turns out to be.
I'm thinking based on the colors it might be a Alenquer or Santarem, but i'm not for certain. Any thoughts on those two options?
