View Full Version : where do the discus names orignate from?
I have searched for a while and cannot find information on how discus are named. I get discus named for their colors but Bulldog, Snakeskin, or Pigeon Blood, where did these names come from?

Just for the record. If you go to frequently asked questions and search pigeon blood this is what you get
"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms. "
Although, a Google search brought up one older post from 2003 on how the name pigeon blood came to be the link in it no longer works.

Names come from the breeder. Most are based in some part on the color or patterns but there are no rules.

From the breeder that 1st bread them. I know of no rules for naming new colors or patterens of fish. If you look at different sellers web sites 5 different names for the same fish.

It varies greatly, some have names that are just a staple for that color. Ex. Snakeskin seems to be any thing not an albino that has that pattern. But others seem to just be pulled out of a hat. One person can (and will call them) one name and another a completely different thing. Which if you look at the fish they could both be right.
