Why do they take a bite of food then immediately spit it out? Then grab another bite, which is sometimes the same one. Making me think they don't like their dinner.

Yep. They sometimes do spit out food they are not familier with, or for whatever reason, won't eat. I really don't know if they are able taste flavors or not. The only food I've never seen any discus spit out is live blackworms.

Can't blame them... I would spit out live blackworms too!

sometimes when my discus swallow a big gobble of live blackworms, they will have to spit it out, since it's too big. same when they swallow a big piece of beefheart. but they will keep trying.

Rocky Mountain Discus
We know a lot about the discus fish diet in wild discus in that the stomachs of captured wild discus fish contain small shrimp, insects and insect larvae, small fish and fair amounts of plant material. When discus fish eat, they appear to mouth the food and spit it out before recapturing it and swallowing it. The reason for this is their teeth, or lack of teeth. Discus fish do not have teeth, but rather grinders in the jaw.

You need to put some Grey Poupon on the blackworms. They want some flavor.

I think they do it because they think they can get it in their mouth at a easier to swallow side or point, they are rearranging it.
