Very nice pat, fish and tank! Is that just a single LED fixture up top or is it t5?

Whats your water like? Just curious.

I have been following your build since the start. The aquarium is coming along very nicely. I have one that is also a work in progress. The water in your tank appears to have that wonderful tannin stain. I am not sure if it is a trick of the camera or not. Is your driftwood still leaching or have you accomplished it with the lamps?

Thanks Matt, it is a three feet T5. I have two 70W MH to go into the canopy once I can get the hubby motivated to help finish it. ;)

ATM water is Florida well water. I target a GH of around 120. Ph runs about 7.8. I add some RO to the mix but need a dedicated RO unit for the fish. Only have a house unit used primary for drinking water.

Oh Pat.I love it...I cant wait till my tank is done... looking at yours makes me want to get it done...uggg i need more money...LOL But my kid keeps draining my account, he was on his way from college to (army) drill and totaled his car, fell asleep driving, got a call at 3am from the state troopers NOT a good way to wake up...he is fine but had to pay 1200 for a gaurd rail and pay for towing and to junk it, bought him a new car so he could get back to school... But this week im buying my driftwood FOR SURE... but till then i will just keep looking at your tank....

Thanks Anik, you should post pictures of your build. Would love to see it...how big is the tank and what do you have in it.

There still is a small amount of tannins leaching from the wood. The T5 light fixture also has one of the red bulbs used of a reef tank. Gives the tank a nice warm look.

I like your use of the driftwood. It really looks great.

Thanks James, I sort of "throw" the wood together and I liked the effect. The fish seem to like it too.

Dang Tina, at least he was not hurt. I finally weaned my daughter last year. Even if you have to wait a little while you will get there with your tank. Enjoy the journey. Been working toward/on this tank since early June.

The tank is 90gal with a 20gal sump. I have 12 juvies in there. It is a bit too many. I was expecting casualties, so I bought extra fish.
One day I will get enough nerve to post some pictures. I am still trying to iron out my lighting and mechanical filtration. Come to think of it, it would be better to post what I have now. Everyone seems to be very helpful with ironing out some of those details.
Great suggestion, Pat. I will try for this week.

They range around 4.5-5.5". I purchased all of them in July. At that time, they ranged from 3.5-4.5". They are getting big and fat. I have been keeping fish since I was little. But, these have certainly been the most challenging and rewarding fish I have ever had. It is easy to see why people enjoy keeping these guys.

Larry, for now the new ones will go into the 100 (60x18x24). Once the juvies are grown out and added to the group I may need to switch tanks between the groups or get another big tank ;) (don't tell hubby yet ;))

When is a discus ever full? At least when they are full, it doesn't seem to last very long.
They are bulking up nicely. Imagine when they are adults, how nice they will look!

Someone on here did a nice poster of his fish. He pasted pictures side by side of each of them as they progressed through time. I wish I could remember whom so I could give him his due credit. I'll bet that project would be great for your babies.

The before and afters are great! When you look at your fish every day, you don't notice all of those changes they go through. When it is on pictures, it becomes easy to see. They have changed so much. All that hard work and TLC really pays off! (I don't really think its hard work. It's my time to relax while I play with the water!) Anyone could think they are different fish altogether.

If you turn one on for a few days, then both, they'll get used to it. Mine paid no attention to my lights from the start. Perhaps it is because they are used to much dimmer lighting? Looks like they are maturing for sure, but still have some to go. In Tefes I've had in the past, they turn more greenish tan instead of more brownish tan, and the light blue turns a rich turq. color.

How are the Cory cats working out for you? Do they leave enough for the Tefe's to graze?

Second Hand Pat
11-21-2011, 09:22 AM
Anik, everyone seems to be getting enough food. The cories were about 3/4 to 1 inch size when they first come and now they are about 2 inches or so. There are about a dozen of them. The tefe's do graze along side of the cories and they do not seem to be suffering if you look at how thick them are.

I target the food towards one of the pump returns which spreads the food across the bottom over 2/3s of the tank to help all get something to eat.

Oh, and I enjoyed the video of the rams. I used to love to watch those little guys when I had them. Those tiny buggers seemed to always take over my tank... Especially the females.

Second Hand Pat
11-26-2011, 11:45 PM
Anik, in the video did you see the small female rams? The posturing of the rams in the video is about par for the rams. Once the females get larger I expect to see more interesting behaviors. The rams and the discus seem to be in harmony at the moment.

The tank stays reasonable clean. I did vacuum and stir the sand a couple times a week. The bulkhead collects water and junk from the bottom and top and I have to replace the filter batting once a week.

The guy in the first picture is the largest tefe. I waiting for the green to turn turquoise and the bodies to turn greenish brown to indicate these fish are maturing.

Rummy
11-27-2011, 01:25 AM
Yes I did see the tiny females. Those males will go for any age it seems ;)
I remember my males behaving well with everyone. It was the females that would become problematic for the other fish. I miss not having any. They were fun to watch. They have a lot of personality. Seems they are always up to something. Of course, their colors never cease to amaze me.
It seems like the waiting for the discus to grow up takes forever. At the same time, watching them slowly mature and seeing all of the details in how they change is a huge reward for the extra effort one puts into raising them.

The largest one is coming up to about six inches or so. I guess a couple of daytime photos may be in order. Also the MHs are up and running on this tank and are burning in nicely. There is only one layer of window screen between the light and top of the tank now.

I'm digging the light and they seem to not be affected by it. Fairly bright and creates some nice shadows. Still getting some tannins from the driftwood? I'm using Catappa leaves and they do a pretty good job of adding the tannins.

Larry, I use layers of window screen between the light and the tank to allow the fish to adjust to the light over time. There is only one layer now. The 70W MHs (6500k) are a fairly inexpensive choice over some of the other lights. are lightweight and have a small footprint. When I first started running the MH they were a bit greenish but will a little burn in time they show more true natural light. The DW is not giving me anymore tannins. Bill P. suggested boiling IAL in RO water for a blackwater extract so considering that. You have a source for Catappa leaves?

so - your background, I'm assuming that filtration is behind it? (I REALLY like the look of it being hidden)
what type filtration?

how much space does the background take up?
I just got myself a new 65g (hooray! too bad it wasn't bigger but it was a DEAL/steal)
I was thinking of using this type of background, but concerned that 65 is pretty small to begin with, and the more space I can keep the better.

Trish,

I used a slimline BG for this tank and is only 1 inch or so thick. http://www.designsbynature.net/products-page/slimline-bgs/ item BJ27WA. This backgound or any of the slimlines would work great in your tank. You do need something to brace against the top edge of the background or you will need to silicone it in.

This tank is a drilled tank attached to a sump so the filter media, heater is in the cabinet. Look at the first couple of pages of this thread (my build thread) to see the details.

Thanks Jay, with these guys I am not using peat or RO. Out of the nine tefes in this tank, I have had six from March of this year and they have adapted nicely to my well water. Of other three, one has adapted and the other two are still acclimating. If you watch the video the two I refer are hanging out towards the back of the tank.

That said I will really do these guys justice with going to an RO mix so these x-mas the RO unit will be under the tree. :)

Hi pat,
While we are on the subject of water... I have been debating about an RO unit as well. Would you mind sharing your water parameters and what helped make your final decision about the RO? Is it purely for breeding reasons, or are you looking for some other results?
I am considering it simply for the thriving vs. surviving aspect. I don't plan on breeding.

Anik, for the tefes the RO will allow me to provide an environment allowing them to thrive. Better colors and health in softer water. With the Cuipeua's, they are a future breeding project but the same reasons apply to them also. My water source is a 330 feet well which pulls water from the Florida Aquifer. GH/KH from tap is about 180 ppm based on the API KH/GH test kit. PH out of tap is 7.4, four hours of aeration and it is 8.2. I do not know the TDS yet as I do not have the meter.

Trish, the "thriving vs surviving" question applies more to wilds then domestics. If you only have domestics I would suggesting stick to tap.

An apisto "master" in a fish club I belonged to told me that apistogrammas require 2' x 2' square of territory to live in relative peace with more than one female. I used to breed them myself in a 12"H x 12"W x 48"L tank I had built. I never harem bred them, but 2 prs. in the one tank. I had it planted, wood and some rock for 20" from ea. end with a 4" open area in the center. I never saw them "trespass" onto each other's end of the tank.

Believe me Trish, it is butt ugly.

All the spawning in the tank have definitely matured out these two males. Looks like they will even be developing trailers. I have also noticed that the breeding female has grown but the breeding male has not. The female is almost as long as the male. Definitely interesting developments. I thought the females quit or slowed their growth while producing eggs.
