so... i know the rule of 10g per discus but can i get away with 9 discus in a 75g? Yes. If they are under 3.5 inches. You only would keep 5 adults in a 55gallon.

That's such a complicated question with so many 'if' scenarios and since many of us have typed it so many times here's a quick summary...

Yes, as long as its really 75G (don't forget rocks, gravel, etc take up volume and other fish, especially plecos and even snails add to the bioload), you keep up with the WC, and monitor the water quality.

i have a battery air pump for power failure and during times like that cant i simply do multiple 25% water changes a day and be safe?

Run heavy filtration with a few air pumps and do 3-5 big waterchanges(75%) a week and you'll be fine. I'm going to have 17 or more in my 110g.

I know this is not what you asked but, I think that a small group of discus looks more appealing than an overstocked tank. Just saying...

i agree ^ a smaller group will be easier to care for and youll enjoy them more, an overstocked tank can become a great deal of work just to keep water quality top notch

I have 9 adults in my 75 gallon. They are all 6"+ with some being close to the 7" mark. I do 60-70% everyother day. They seem fine for now. This is only a temp. tank until I get my monster tank. They have been in there for over a month and actually seem to be doin better than when they were in my 180 b/c they are getting more wcs in my 75 than my 180.

would 6 discus and 50 neon tetras be pushing the limit?

i was thinking 9 discus and no dithers but if i can do 6 and50 neons id prefer that

For me the ratio would be more like 6 and 25, not 50, and they should be Cardinals if you like the Neon coloring. Cardinals are well suited to the higher temps and will live much longer than neons.

i have lots of gravel and wood, plants in my 75 and i only have 5 discus among other fish and they are getting pretty big. glad thats all i have. i dont like the look of a over crowded tank. not natural looking imho. :)
