Alright so i have been posting on here for about a month now and have been having a somewhat successful discus experience so far thanks to many of you.
as some may already know i am going to be upgrading to a 100 gallon rimless tank and i thought i might share the process

Here are the specifications for my future setup (these are not final and feedback would be appreciated :) ) :

Tank: 100 gallon rimless with polished edges
dimensions: 48Lx24Hx20W
despite my tank is going to closely reseble discus-n00bs, i decided not to go with low iron mainly because of price

Stand: Diy stand that my grandfather has been working on for me, im going to see it tomarrow so i will update pics of it
unfortunatley i havent played to much in the production due to school and work taking up all of my time but hopefully will get to do some work on it tomarrow.
Oak finish/skin to match furniture in the room

Substrate: Pool filter sand
i will be using this as it will be easy to clean, and give it a nice natural look.
this will give the tank a good appearance without the sacrifice of water quality as gravel sometimes can cause

Filter: I am not 100% sure on this yet
i am thinking of the eheim 2217 or 2215 ( not sure about 1 or 2 of them or which model)
i was going to use a FX5 but there are basically no inline heaters to use with the size tubing and also thought it would defeat the filters purpose by restricitng flow by converting tube size
Basically I am going to be looking for a canister filter that will fit the hydor 300w on the out house to heat water re-entering the tank

If anyone has any help on this i would appreciate it, im choosing my filter aroung the heater because i do not want a internal heater to clutter the tank
Also which would be a better option 1 filter with 1x 300w heater or 2x heaters with 2x 200w heaters?
Does the hydor 5/8 300w model fit the eheim 2217 on the output hose ( i found online that the intake hose differs from output, im not sure if this is true)

Heater: Either 2x 200w hydor inline heaters or 1x 300w hydor inline heater
This will hopefully make the tank apppear more natural and less cluttered to display more of a natural discus habitat
I really want this tank to seem to be running off of nothing

Lighting: Marineland double bright led fixture 48-60
decided this would suit my needs best and would be less expensive than
Decoration: I have ordered some nice peices of manzanita wood from pc1 and hopefully will receive them in the upcoming weeks, updates will follow once received

Fish: As of now the tank will have 4 fish altogether until i grow out some juvies i currently have
2x albino
2x checkerboard pigeon bloods

I eventually want to venture into wilds but i figured i get a hang of everything first before i get ahead of myself

More details and updates will follow but this is my basic rundown of the tank

Please feel free to critique the plan and any suggetions are welcomed and will be considered, as i only have the stand, drift wood, tank , and fish as of now

alright so i got to see the stand yesterday and it took some pictures that ill try and upload tomarrow things are coming together quite well. the wood from manzman is coming soon aswell as he said recently shipped it, i have been busy lately but im going to try to update this as much as possible

im getting a eheim 2217 from another site member as well so i just got to find one more preferably so i think this will be my filter setup

im currently having a issue with one albino who has turned pale white but still is acting normal, im not quite sure what is going on with him as of now but hopefully ill get it figured out, i posted it in the general section if you want to take a look

ill keep everyone posted and thanks for checking the thread

i got my wood from pc1, my stand, my eheim 2217 filter, and my hydor 300w heater.... i decided on buying another hydor heater because i got it for like 40 bucks so i grabbed another one for another canister filter, and some media for the canister.....

so heres the pics and i have also some pics of the tank in progress...

to be honest not really but i will be getting a peice of acrylic or make a net for the top wen i get around to it, i dont think they will jump because of how much room they will have and it will be only 4 in there for a while

Hi,

I made a top out of the eggcreate used for lighting. It was easy to make and works well.

Mine is open, only had festivums jump.

If you use acrylic as a top, get a thicker piece. The thin pieces will end up bowing because of the heat/humidity from the water/lights.

I had the same discus (heckels) in my rimless open top for 3 years with 0 deaths due to jumping. Suddenly in the span of 2 months, I lost 1 to jumping and another lost an eye (saved him in time, but he landed on one side and the eye burst) also because he got spooked and jumped. That batch isn't with me anymore, but I'm arranging to bring in a batch of wilds from Hudson. I have commissioned a tank to be made with glass covers just to make sure that I don't lose any more fish to jumping. You can never be 100% sure your discus will never jump - mine took 3 years to do it

hey guys and girls just updating you on the progress of my tank. I am still waiting for my driftwood to sink and im trying to get another eheim 2217 to run on the tank and heat i it up while i keep the one i already own running on my established tank. I actually had run into some trouble with my discus, i dewormed them then i ran into i guess gill fluke problem with them. I acted fast enough and i was able to resolve the issue and everyone seems to be back on track. Im going to al's whenever i have time to pick up another (bigger) pb from him. it is already familiar with the pb i have now as they were tank mates ( ithink he was trying to pair the two). He said hell hook me up with some media to stil into my filter so i can plop this fisk right in my new tank but then again comes the issue with quarantine and i have no clue where to start. seems like i have alot of logistics to figure out! here are some update pics of my current fish

I would still qt the new fish even though it seems like a hassle.
Better to be safe than sorry.
Tank looks gorgeous. Do you have any plans with the back of the tank? Perhaps some vinyl backing?

frinklinduds
12-10-2011, 05:10 PM
yes i actually am going to be making it black background just havent had the chance to get around to it yet.... as far as qt goes, how should i approach this? move all fish from the current 30 gallon to this new tank, then put the new fish inside the 30 gallon OR should i just setup a brand new tank for the new fish and just toss in some media from the established hob filter and put it in the new hob filter?

also as far as vinyl goes for the back, is it adhesive? because i want something thats going to be stuck to the glass pretty good so there is no reflection as there would be if i taped a background on

TNT77

Just a word of caution with the black background. You have a pigeon based fish...expect it to pepper.

yes alan i would totally recommend the rimless it looks amazing but just think of the jumping situation. i dont really think about it and hope it doesnt become an issue... can always make something to put over it at night or something

ive always wanted a rimless so i finally just went for it because also i love the look to it. i never thought id be going this big with it though. well worth the price, and wait. The tank maker was easy to deal with and it was shipped perfectly. If ur looking for a tank like this go with miracles in glass

yes i did take this into consideratione, if the fish is grown to adult size, is it still going to pepper or is it something that happens with growth?

i may go without the background for a while

TNT77
12-10-2011, 05:25 PM
Growth does not affect peppering genetics and environment do. I started out in my 120g with a light tan colored gravel and no background. My 2 butterflys had light peppering on their noses. When I switched to pool filter sand the peppering went away completely. So even just a small change can make a difference in peppering.

I would qt the new fish in the 30gal tank. Less water means less medications to use.
The vinyl that I use has an adhesive in the back. You spray the back of the tank with soap/water and apply the vinyl. Then use a squeegee to pull out excess water. Once it dries the vinyl will stick to the back of the tank. It will be a water tight seal. The vinyl can be purchased at any shop that does window signs or even possibly kinkos. The best part is the vinyl comes in hundreds of colors.
The shops around my area (Orange County, CA) sells the vinyl for $2.50 per feet.

walt3
02-08-2012, 09:14 PM
i painted my tank back wall black but dont have your color of discus so not worried about peppering. i like how it looks like the deep blackness of the far off water of the amazon. lol. using imagination of coarse. lol.:) adds to the depth because you cant really see it like a wall of white or other light color imho. walt. kind of fades away visually.

frinklinduds
02-08-2012, 10:54 PM
yeah i also just love how crisp and clean black looks but these fish are just so stunning that if they would heavily pepper it would be such terrible thing because it is avoidable, i will probably find somewhere with vinyl and purchase a few different colors. probably some dark ones and some light ones and see what fits best, new p tonight when i get home

to the jumpers question i will be buyi a sheet of acrylic to put on the top that i can of course remove when i have people over and want to show off the rimless part :D . But i will have it on to protect the investment and make sure my fish stay in the tank

Nice looking setup. That piece of driftwood you got from pc1 is amazing!

Didn't see it anywhere in your initial post. How thick of glass did you have to go with in order to go rimless? Looking to get a 100 - 120 gallon rimless tank built here shortly so just seeing what everyone else has used on their setups.

02-22-2012, 12:01 AM

frinklinduds
02-27-2012, 04:06 PM
havent decided on a background yet or really given alot of thought to it ive been really busy, as far as color enhancers i havent really messed around with that either ive just been feed FDBW, What is this naturose? is it something u would add to a mix or something that u feed direct?

where did you buy that tank?

cjr8420
02-27-2012, 04:58 PM
u can buy flakes/pellets with naturose or i guess u could get it and add to ur mix just seems to be popular right now cause its advertised in the flake like Ken's Premium Color Flake + Naturose.i have not used that exactly but i heard good things

frinklinduds
02-27-2012, 06:10 PM
where did you buy that tank?

i got it from miracles in glass, i think they are located in Canada... heres a link to there website
BTW i got this idea for the tank from Discusn00b aka matt on this website who got it from them aswell (we have same tank)

http://www.miraclesaquariums.com/

u can buy flakes/pellets with naturose or i guess u could get it and add to ur mix just seems to be popular right now cause its advertised in the flake like Ken's Premium Color Flake + Naturose.i have not used that exactly but i heard good things

Ill have to look into it because i stopped feeding my BH mix because it was way to much of a pain, and also fish didnt care to much for it. The only thing i liked about it is i had the paprika which i have heard helps pb based discus to bring out read and it did seem to work when the fish actually ate it ( very seldom). Now i just feed freeze dried blackworms as my main staple in their diet with an occasional feeding of tetra bits. I would feed them tetra bits more often but not many of my fish even go for it and i find it to just sit at the bottom until i fish it out >:0.

But i will look into this naturose because i was expecting to get deep red discus from hans but (not his fault at all) from what i understand it takes some time to develop that deep coloration. They are also in the 5 inch range ( from what i can see visually they seem to be on the + side) and they look like they have much growing to still do :D

Any questions feel free to ask and any opinions or comments feel free to post and ill keep u guys posted with pics ASAP

Love your tank. Great contrasting colors with the white background, white sand and then BAM orange fish. I like it. The pictures improved too haha, not sure if its the water clearing up, lighting, or camera...but they look good. Gotta love the Miracles tank quality, I know I love mine.

as far as a timer goes , i have mine set on one right now the only draw back of the light is u cant have it on a timer that turns off day lights and then turns on moonlights ( the switch is the same for each) so basically its either u have the moonlights on a timer or daylights on a timer, you cant have both. I just keep the daylights on a timer and put the moonlights on manually when i need to... no big deal to me

hello everybody sorry its been a while since i have updated this thread but here i am and unfortunatley this post isnt one of the best but i guess life happens. Unfortunately i have lost the fire red i have due it it jumping out of the tank. i just woke up one morning and there it was on the floor, this is very unfortunate but really my own fault because i didnt want to listen to any advice about the open top. On a better note i did that day go out and buy some supplys from homedepot, made a screen which my light sits on and i dont think this will happen again. I will post pictures of the screen and stuff soon.

WELL on to the even better stuff. Since i have only three discus in my 100 gallon now it looks a bit empty and will be adding some more fish from hans asap around 2-3 more.

that being said these were the types i was looking at and debating on so if anyone wants to add or suggest anything please feel free i am open to suggestions but i will be buying from Hans only (just because he greatly exceeded my expectations last time and know he will again)

- Silver PB
- Red PB
- Fire Red ( to replace the one i lost )

all in the +/- 5 inch range to match my existing fish

Please feel free to comment and ill get back with some updates asap

My LFS gets their discus from Hans and they had a few adult pairs when I was in last week. I could not stop staring at the Silver PBs. As good as they look on Hans' site they look 100 times better in person! I highly recommend them.

1. Pics of new Fish
2. Put a light blue background on this tank but it seems to have made the fish pepper a tad bit more than having no background. I may revert back to not having a background because i havent decided if i like the look yet

Enjoy i will be updating more this more often as i was previously having computer issues

thanks for lookin and enjoy

First of all.... AWESOME SETUP!

Second - thanks for taking the time to post up all the detail that went into this project. I'm new to the forums here but have been keeping discus for over a year now and am still learning a lot by reading threads like this one.

Also - My tank doesn't have a top and I haven't had any issues with jumpers. Have you?

Could it be the dark wood that makes them pepper?

frinklinduds
08-08-2012, 11:44 PM
1. You are very welcome, i'm happy that i could help in any way possible

2. Yes i lost my first fire red due to it jumping out. i recommend a screen or cover to avoid such an occurrence. I made a screen for mine for less than 10 bucks from materials from home depot. (plus its a custom fit for my tank).

so yes i have lost 1 fish, i recommend making a screen to keep the fish in the tank and off the floor

3. yes i am now thinking that the dark wood could be the cause for them to pepper. It is a light amount of peppering but i've been thinking of cleaning the wood soon so ill prolly do it next water change and ill let you know if peppering subsides at all.

thanks for looking guys more pics to come
