I Purchased 6 x 2-2.5in Red Turqs and one 3in bull body Turqs from a breeder down in Wilmington,NC. They are about 3months old. They are being fed mainly color flake as a staple. I am going 75% water changed with tap water and Prime.

They are in a 29gallon, BB Grow-out tank with a 70 aquaclear with 2stage Biomesh filter(turned down). A Odessea 55 power compact light lights up half the tank. For heating I am using a 150Watt adjustable, submersible heater. I have a 55 gallon they will be moved to when the time comes.

The Parents are Red Turqs and are with the breeder. The wall behind the tank is yellow it makes the tank look funkie!

Shape looks good. It does seem like a year to grow out takes forever. Good luck with them and keep us posted.

James, you will get use to the WCs and on a small tank they are nothing. I do a 30 gallon change on the 40 in about 30 minutes and most of that is waiting on the draining/filling. While waiting I feed the other tank etc to pass the time. Your youngsters look good. ;)

Thanks Pat,

With my luck the military will move me the instant they get full grown and I will have to start over. :D

How do you guys feel about gorwing them on strictly dry food(mainly flake)?

They look really good!!! I use a shop vac on my WC. Cuts the time down to nothing. The first 10 to 15 gallons I use the cleaner thing I got. I just keep the shop vac hose towards the top and away from the fish. Doesn't seem to bother them at all.

I try to vary the food: beefheart flake, Omega 3 Superflake, Al's Freeze-dried blackworms, live blackworms, bloodworms, pellets (first feeding of the day as pellets are not their fave).

Grow out won't be as good. I didn't see any research with BH, but from what I've read it's live food, frozen food, then dry foods. What one study I saw said though that if you varied the diet it'll be the most cost-effective.

I'm sure BH probably is up there with frozen foods (maybe better depending on formulation).

You can try the freeze dried blackworm, beefheart flake, and prime reef flake if you want to try the dry food route.
