View Full Version : How do you cull?

I'm not asking how you select fish to cull. I'm curious about how people kill the fish (or do you?). Do you try to do it humanely? If so, what do you think is the most humane method?

FYI, I'm NOT thinking of breeding Discus any time soon. Just curious. I'm probably too much of a wimp to breed Discus because I would have a tough time killing a perfectly healthy fish whose body shape wasn't quite right, color was off, etc.

small ones i use a razor and quickly cut the spine at the back of the head. larger either clove oil or ice and water in a bucket

I pinch their heads, it's over quick.

Big fish have always went out doors and got a cinder block dropped on them. If they felt anything it was for a fraction of a second.

Another fast way is to put them in a triple grocery bag and swing it against a tree, over in the blink of an eye.

It stinks to kill a fish you had a long time but it sucks worse to watch them die a slow miserable death.

Sometimes it hurts more to keep them alive!

It is good to keep a big aggressive cichlid, they love culls.

Smaller ones get moved to the "2.5 gallon porcelain tank" LOL ones that don't fit in that "tank" get frozen till garbage day.

Of course, next I have a big aggressive cichlid to put out of its misery. Not fun, and I don't remember where I left the clove oil...

I live in a remote area, so I've always just thrown them out the back door. Critters carry them off overnight.

i put it in a grocerie bag, slam it on the floor and then throw it on my roof. especially this time of year. the hawks will pick it up and devour it immediately. theres a lot of birds where i live.
