Larger ones tend to out compete smaller ones for food, as well as shove and chase them around. It's not ideal for growing fish, and can stunt them.

If you have more than a dozen discus, chasing around is not bad, but if you have a few, then it may become a problem.

I have a group of 13 of mixed sizes and can see two of the smaller ones have fallen behind, one of the very small ones has grown tremendously - its kind of survival of the fittest. I read a few books which stated that smaller discus need an adult present to keep them in check, however having spoken to many specialists, read posts on here and kept some for three months I would say its probably best to keep smaller ones separate.

If you are to buy smaller ones, from my experience, better to have them grow in a separate tank first. I lost two discus' because of mixing :(

Those are tiny. Not sure about mixing those with bigger fish.

I have 6 discus ranging from 9cm to 14cm. In my experience the biggest factor is the personality of the fish. If they are confident and aggressive they will be fine. If they are timid and shy they are best left in a separate tank. The safest option is to separate them until they are a similar size and become confident and aggressive feeders. Good Luck

Nevermind. I read your post wrong. If they are only 2cm longer, then they should be ok to mix.
