I stayed up all night tuesday because i caught these babies spawning! Funny thing is i had them about 12 hours. As soon as i threw in the spawning mops it wasn't 30 minutes later and 2 of them were getting spunky.

The second spawn was from the same male but the female was my red cap here is a few pics of her. She is probably one of my favorite goldies. I have caught the goldie bug thanks to my baby girl. We now have 21 goldfish not including a few 1000 fry.

Can you explain "hand spawned"? Did you get the eggs out by squeezing the belly of the female and do the same with the male?

Exactly, you have to wait until they are already spawning to do it. You can't just go squeezing them to get the eggs. You can youtube people doing it. Some people are really against it, but the facts are most hatcheries do it that way. I usually let them do it then collect the eggs. I wanted to make sure i got some this time since it was my first oranda spawn and i was excited. The second spawn i just collected mops.

So mops are the spawning surface? Congrats on your first oranda spawn

We had some fantails awhile back and grew out probably around 200 to half and inch then culled down to about 15-18 that were decent. So I would say maybe 10% were even what i would consider pet store grade. We got 2 or 3 I felt came out pretty good.

Yeah just mops like you would for rainbows. Thank you all. I know they are not discus but they have grown on me. Especially since a year ago the only goldfish allowed in my house were to feed my lionfish. I could not stand them now they are a favorite in my fishroom. So much personality and you don't even need a net to move em.

In all the years I kept goldfish as a kid, I never paid attention to spawning or even read about how it was done. Goldfish breeding is a complete mystery to me. This thread is really interesting! I'd like to see how the fry continue to develop.

Way cool, keep us updated. This does not seem to be too much different then spawning Koi, albeit on a smaller scale. i did this a couple of years ago with water hyacinth (in place of mop heads) and an innotek 400 gallon pool for growout.

Thats cool you have spawned koi. I want to do it but have never had any. Currently i live in a townhome and can't get a large enough tub down in my basement to do koi but it is on the to do list as soon as i move. I usually just use homemade spawning mops to catch the eggs then i hatch them out in a sterilite tote. Sometimes if i catch them in the act i will hand spawn them but lately i have not been saving the spawns since i have a few thousand that are around a month old and need to do some serious culling before i attempt to raise another batch.

Pics of eggs on mop. These eggs are actually from a ryukin x telescope

Very cool. I'd like to try with my orandas from chinas finest goldfish. I imported alot of a grade and show quality ones for resale. Kept my favs.
Is there a way to promote spawning. Ie. a wc? Like discus?
What ph do you keep your goldfish at?
How often do you change water on the tubs? Daily?

I really dont do a whole lot to promote spawning other than raise the temp a bit on them to around 72-74. The adults get 50% water changes 3-4 times a week the fry get 95-100% water changes daily and i also wipe the tubs clean with paper towels when i do their water change. I also clean the sponges at least 3 times a week. I have seen alot of people raise them in green water, but i don't have access to large amounts of green water and i like clean tanks. Hard to take the discus keeper out of a guy! I feed them bbs primarily for the first month then start adding in the veggies and I do feed a bit of my discus beefheart mix occasionally.

I cleane out the 55 and culled 9 more that were not making the cut. So far i have saved 103 that i will probably raise. I have probably around a 1000 that are coming up on a month in a kiddy pool that need to be culled through hard. Then i also got the 8 or 9th spawn 2 days ago. I caught them in the act so i gave them a squeeze and it looks as if the fertility is going to be around 95% so it should be another large batch! I am hoping to have a nice collection ready to go for pond season. Here are a few pics just in case you were wondering what 85 goldfish in a bowl looked like :) You can see some of them are starting to color up.

I snapped a few more pics today. These are the pics of the mentioned kiddy pool. It is 3ft diameter by 6" deep. They are hard to see but there is a bunch of them. The green bowl has the 48 hour old spawn in it. They should hatch and go free swimming in the next 24-36 hours. It's amazing the hatch and free swim almost instantly. Then for about 2 days the stay attached to the side walls until their egg sacks are completely gone. I am pretty new to the goldfish but have already had over a dozen spawns with 3 varietys so its pretty cool to see them grow. I kept 7 of my fantail babies from my very first goldfish spawn about a year ago. They are not very big because i stunted them and i also had a bit of bacterial problems that caused most of the spawn to have bad fins. The first spawn caught me by surprise since they are according to everywhere i read. Rarely breed in aquariums. Now that i have a bit of a system that works for me they seem to be on a much better path and i have had no issues with bacteria causing bent fins. I do however have typical goldfish and they need culled heavy. Most of my time is spent culling. I have probably culled 80-90% to this point.

Cool,

If you ever find yourself needing more gorwout space, hit craigslists and pick up an intex collaspable pool, I have one that is 600 gallons and makes a great emergency pond.

Good idea i have thought about using them just wondered how sturdy they would be when you were changing the water and such?

Thank you for the tip i will be looking for one of these soon. We have had a unexpected development in so of the fry. I would guess that around 10% are starting to have telescoping eyes! I have a few pics the first is of a telescoping single tail. I kept 8 single tails to see if any grew a wen was totally stunned when i seen one with telescoping eyes. The second pic is of a regular eyed fry next to one that is starting to telescope.
