Hello everyone I don't have a lot of posts on the forum because I'm fairly new to your forum. My question is about water temperature in my breeding tanks. My breeding tanks are set at about 84-85 degrees. I want to induce spawning by adding cooler water to my daily water changes my question is how many degrees cooler do I add when changing water and do I adjust the the heater to reflect the new temperature or do I just let the water increase to the normal temperature settings? I hope I asked that right. Thanks so much in advance for all your help you guys have saved my butt many times. Josie

I add water cool enough to drop the temperature over about an hour to 78 degrees, and don't adjust the heater, let it kick in to slowly raise the temp back up. Works every time. I think they react to it as if it was rainy season in the Amazon-- which is, of course, baby-making time...

How do you do it slowly drip or just small quantities with a cup or something ? oh I chang about 50% a day

small bucket, probably a gallon at a time in a 40 breeder. It amounts to about a fifty per cent WC.

LOL. I have always kept all of my breeding tanks at 82. No need to keep them warmer. As far as cooling the water I once watched Jim Quarles do a 50% water change with water that was 66 degrees going into the tank. When adding cold water you are trying to simulate a large rain storm that floods the river with new/colder water. Do it all at once and you will have much better results.

Hey, I'll try that. Bucket brigade's a pain. I was afraid they'd get shocked by too dramatic of a rapid temp change. Thanks!

Agree with John. All my adult tanks stay around 82. I add water that is around 78. I think I will try it colder. I can't get to 66 during the summer since my fish room is in a unfinished basement but during the winter I can get it pretty cool. Along with my 330 gallon tote I also keep two 44 gallon brutes for storage that I can selectively keep warmer for fry or cooler for breeders.

Don't forget to give them condoms, they should always practice safe sx.

Where should I put the condom, in the breeding cone?

On the breeding cone, yes. and make sure it's lubricated for the female's comfort... :p

You know, though... seriously.... if you wanted to take the wigglers and hand-raise them, you could do that-- put a condom on the cone and when they turn into wigglers, roll the condom carefully back up, full of water and wigglers, of course, and transfer them to another tank. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Judy, isn't it easier to just move the parents?

Wigglers stick to the cone pretty well. Just move the cone. I've done it.

Not to mention most condoms are treated with anti spermicidal (sp?)...........

I have never found it necessary for "tricks" to induce spawning. 40% daily wc's, same temp, is all I ever have done.
