I'm excited - showing off some pictures. How many wrigglers ya figure are there? (i'm too hungover to concentrate and try to count)
Yield rates to expect?

Young'ish piwowarski red turks. Around a year old, maybe 14 months

(I'm leaving on x-mas to visit family for a week....which makes this difficult)
I might have to find a fish sitter

I really like this breeding cone. Wider than most that I've seen. I seem to think that makes it easier on the male to fertilize
This is my first try with that cone and the yield seems much higher than previous tries (only 3 other batches and all were so few fertilized that they ate the fry)

I bought this pair from other members in North Carolina. They've raised before....so I'm optimistic that a few will make it

The male didn't like me taking this video or it would have been longer. I will post another video each day, maybe. You could see his stress bars appearing as i taped

It's a small spawn. These are big healthy fish. The parents will take care of them until you get back from your trip. Be careful of getting a fish sitter. If the sitter isn't experienced in caring for Discus fry he will do more harm than good. If you have someone who knows what he's doing, start feeding BBS at 3 or 4 days free swimming.

Half the eggs were lost to fungus....or the male not doing too good of a job. :)

Don't worry much, they're doing ok without eating BBS until you get back

Eggs are not lost to fungus. Fungus attacks dead eggs.

agreed, regarding the eggs
I don't think my male was very good with the previous, skinny breeding cone. Too much of a curve to it

only around 20% were fertilized

This batch, 50%
Learning curve....and better cone

Wife out of town for the week: me playing fish. Here are the other 4 of the 6
Hoping to get one more pair out of these (and i was playing with lights in the video)

The female didn't make it easy for him, either, looking at how the eggs are scattered. They will both get better with age. I don't think the cone had anything to do with it. I had a line of red turquois years ago that I started with that wer F1 wild royal blue x Wattley RT's. These fish took awhile to mature. The females were always 12 months before they were spawning and the males weren't worth a damn until 16-18 months. They weren't like the Asian PB's spawning at 8 months.

These Piwowarski RT's have very good patterns that people have been posting. Some improvements could be made on shape. It would be nice to see someone here continue to improve the strain.

Actually, that female moves them after they hatch
From one side of the cone to the other (away from any fungus)
She's the first I've seen do that.

I hope these round out a bit more, in a few months. They're still on the young side

But yea, I also hope to make some improvements. I plan to grow out as many of these as possible and try some selective breeding
One of the males in the other tank is almost ideal. He'll get force matched with her if there are no other females in this batch

thanks for the comments

Discus will always move the fry. Instinctual survival tactic. All in all, this line of RT's is as good as I've seen in awhile.

Update video

They started breaking away from the cone last night, which didn't make the parents happy
Right at the 5-6 day mark (they laid at 7pm on a Thursday, eggs hatched saturday night)

And attaching today. 5 full days, going on the 6th day for attachment
I woke up around 3am and lowered the water level, as the fry were swimming everywhere in an unorganized manner

Not a high yield, but it's my first time for attachment
I'm very pleased!
The female keeps them in the corner where I can't see very well. I'm guessing 20

Sitting at the airport, not liking leaving the fish for a week at this stage

I have a sitter that will feed and clean once a day

I suppose well see in a week.....

With any luck the babies will survive on mom and dad and then be ready for bbs when you get home. It would be hard to leave a successful brood like that. If they don't survive they will probably breed for you again when you have the time. Good luck

Agreed agreed and agreed

The wife was ready to threaten...knew I didn't want to leave

I would cancel on my family, but sex strike if I cancel on hers. :)

Yup, guessing more like 80, now

And how long to keep with the parents
