It isn't a must lots of people on here just change straight from tap most people use prime or safe. I started aging my water because I felt like my fish were stressed to much after I did water changes from tap. Now that I am aging I can change my water and the fish don't even notice.

I agree with ZX10R, I am using aged water for my breeding pairs. There is a difference in the way the fish act. My breeders don't even notice the change, no gas bubbles, just a nice mellow wc.

I use straight out of the tap with a bit of Dechlorinator...It all depends on the chemistry of your local tapwater as to whether the Discus act differently when the new water goes in, obviously tapwater will be better for them in some areas than others.

my pH straight out of the tap - 7.4.
aged it is 8-8.2.
a big pH swing stresses fish. aging with heater & aeration de-gasses the CO2, thus leveling out the pH. probably adds some O2 too, which is good.
