I have a Tru Temp titanium heater with the controller (300w) on one side of my tank. the fluval heater on the other side went bad. can I buy another titanium heater and use both with the one controller? the controller has only one plug. can I use an extension?

The controller specs do say the max load is 1000W. http://www.jbjlighting.com/pdfs/Flier-True-Temp-Titanium.pdf
There should be no problem in connecting two 300W heaters on one controller.
There is only one temperature probe. So both the heaters will be controlled for the temperature at one location in the tank.

That is correct. I have a different controller and two heaters connected to it. You can buy a simple and cheap power splitter like this one:
