I have ten discus growing out in a 75. 1 pair pb, 1 pair of 14 bar browns, 1 pair of tefe haraldi and 4 royal turquoise. What i want to know is why the 14 bats are so bad tempered toward the others. Is this just the nature of these 2 fish or is it related to the strain. I know they are cichlids but these 2 take the biscuit temper wise. They are not the largest fish but are definately male and female (their bits show after a meal) trouble is they dont even like each other much. They are about three inches standard length. I have to say that despite all this they are my favourite two discus.

At 3 inches they should be just very young teeneagers and they are are just the dominate fish in the tank. Also if is very hard to sex adult fish. Those fish should really not ne more than around 4 to 5 months old so sexing them at this stage s nothing more than guess work. It has nothing to do with the strain. All animals fight (including people), it is the most natural thing in the world. They will normally work it out. Chances are they are both males....

As long as you are spreading your food out so everyone is getting some you should be alright.

Well, a little 'off topic', but I have to ask, 'what's a 14 bar brown, and also, what are Tefe Haraldi's??..a green/blue cross,or?' Thanks in advance, Gary

14 bars a a form of haraldi with 14 thin bars and thin green struations. See other post re 14 vs 9. I think i also got the type wrong. These fish are obviously not haraldi. I meant aques they are red spotted greens. Wasnt thinking when typing.
Suprised they may be dominant as they are not the largest. These are the pbs.

Curious as to where you got your info on 14 bar Haraldi's and what is a royal turquoise?

Practical fishkeeping ran a series on wild discus october november 2009 in which bleher illustrates and mentions that wild haraldi can have between 9 and 16 bars. The royal turquoise may be a trade name. They are coming through with a red background and blue stripes. A pretty fish but probably just a mutt.

Thank you. I have never heard of a wild discus having anything other than 9 bars. Since Heiko claimed, through his DNA sampling, that browns and blues are the same, one would think that with so many brown/blue discus imported into this country, someone would have seen one. I never have. I have never read anything like it either. Do you or anyone else have an article or link to such information? I cannot find anything on my google searches.

Heiko does mention 10-16 bar Haraldi's in his Volume 1 book, stating that they are very rare. Can you post pics of yours?

Thanks,

Mat

Hi matt sorry the photos. You can see these arent snakeskins as you can see they look like haraldi but the striations are very thin. I think they are turning out to be very attractive fish even some of thr bars are misshapen.

You agree they look like haraldi and not snakeskin. These came in with my ordinary nine bar brown type haraldi.

damba,

Received the articles this morning. Thank you. You were lucky to get this rarity. I hope it is a haraldi and not a SS. Time will tell. Good luck with it.
