Removed the last of my substrate last night and it was really smelly = anaerobic. Cant believe i let them live over that. They already seem happy, the stress bars are showing less.

What was your gravel cleaning routine? I've removed gravel from tanks befor and it smelled like... Gravel.
What kind of substrate did you have?

Sand. Daily 50 perc wcs. Sand stirred once a week.

I have mixed substrate. Fine white sand and dark plant growing substrate (forgot which one I bought). I don't vacuum my substrate as I never find anything when I use the syphon trying to get stuff the substrate and I hardly see any poop at all. I have a ton of fish in the tank. I do wonder at times what the heck is going on? I have 4 cannister filters that I clean pretty often and my fx5 gets real dirty real fast. The other three, not so much. I also have a ton of bottom dwellers that sift through at least top layer of the substrate. So I am guessing that my bottom dwellers are basically doing the vaccuming job for me. But I am concerned wondering from time to time where all the waste may be ending up in my tank.

Often wondered that myself. Maybe it is just it naturally breaking down into minute particles that get filtered out?
