Use breast meat only. If you are buying it already ground, buy the 99% fat free groung breast. Do not buy thigh meat or other dark meat.

Pig heart can be used.

Hi Mat, interesting how you use turkey breast as beefheart replacement. I wonder if you ever sort of making small study or simple observation comparing growth, colour and body shape between discus fed with beef heart and turkey/chicken breast?

I saw a lot of posts by breeders/hobbyist in Malaysia, Singapore, and other parts of Asia use it for their recipes. Before, when it was still searchable via Google (they've since made reading it accessible only to members), one of the bigger Discus forums over there came up a lot with pig heart as a primary ingredient when looking for information on mixes.

I never did a side by side study between BH, turkey breast, and seafood. I all but quit using BH anyway. What I did notice was that there was not a whole lot of difference that I could notice with turkey or salmon, and that the salmon (or tuna) discus just seemed better off. I cannot explain that last comment, though. It may be just in my mind. Research I did suggested salmon being a superior food to BH, so I went that way. Also, and I surely do not want to be a name dropper here, but the American King of discus told me that salmon was an excellent discus food. I go 50::50 with any of the three with shrimp. I mixed all 4 equally, and the fish ate it, but not as aggressively. I would also just drop in just a piece of ground turkey breast to the fry and they tore it up. Just make sure it is 99% fat free breast meat.

Mat

Eric, pigs are more common in Asia than cattle, so pig heart is used primarily in some areas. Same mixes as BH.

I know, my reference was just to reassure the OP that there's a lot of people that use it, not that it was superior or different in anyway.

Hey Francis.
I think I saw you mention calcium citrate in another thread somewhere too.
Could you tell me what it is and why you use it?
Thanks.

hi Chris....discus require some calcium in their diets......without calcium discus may have short operculum, short dorsal and anal fins, weak bone structure.......being lazy too since I don't add veggies(spinach, broccoli (high calcium)to the homemade mixtures.......just simple just add calcium citrate(easily dissolves)..........Andrew Soh mentioned this in his second book........Discus Problems & Solutions is a great reference book for discus hobbyist.
