View Full Version : Bananas for Discus?

So I was reading a few old posts last night regarding different types of food and I heard about bananas so, I thought to myself (I said self), lets try a small piece. The discus were like fry attacking baby brine shrimp. I mean they devoured this piece in seconds.

So then the next thought that came to mind is, this can't be a regular staple for them because I don't know of anyone who feeds this. Also, what can bananas do to the water quality?

Can anyone shed some more info on the health benefits of fruit to discus?

Thanks,

Jeff

I believe Nandi mentioned feeding banana to his wild Xingu.

It can be used, but remove any that is not eaten quickly. It would easily foul water.

I've seen quite a few mixes that people use banana as a binder. I've been using oatmeal but maybe on the next batch I'll try this.
thank's for rehatching it Jeff...

Think about it bananas are from south america and probably goes into the waters at time. Talking to a friend who lives in South America for 32 years said that lots of the fisherman threw banana in the river and the fish loved them. Funny though would not think of giving them to them LOL

Discus are mainly detrivores and oppurtunistic. Bananas, why not. Doesnt sound so crazy to me. We give them beefheart. They would never eat this in the wild. As long as they are healthy and well cared for feed them what tgey will eat. :)

Wattley did an experiment feeding baby discus bananas only. They lived for 2 weeks on this diet then perished (if I remember the story correctly). He did use it in his BH mix before he went dry food. Most who use it in their mixes use very ripe, soft ones.

I feed it to my bn pleco occasionally...haven't in a while..It is crazy it is like it gives him a sugar high. He shimmies all over the tank really fast after he eats it. LOVES it! But feed it sparingly because I assume that kind of reaction can't be healthy LOL. I wonder if fish get type 2 diabetes? hehe

Oh come on Jay, aren't you going to tell them what happened? Going to leave them in suspense?

Pat is right, I did feed my Xingús different fruits, including many others. Whether they accepted it or not was season, mood, flavour and consistency dependant. They preferred the ripe but not creamy fruits. I didn't feed it for any particular reason other than the main indea feeding-wise that I'd tried to feed them as many different things as possible. I experimented with basically anything that I found safe for them to eat. Fruits, bugs, worms, you name it...

I did this last week. My discus didn't eat the banana bits right away but they did eat them. I wonder if they will eat license plates?

In the new DISCUSBOOK 02 I just got, there is an article on discus nutirtion and food mix they made without beefheart. Bananas were one of the ingredients.
