Hi folks,

I tried the search tool, but did not find much information. I have some tankmates in quarentine (cardinals, cories and one pleco). So far, so good. But do you medicate fishes during quarentine? If so, which medication do you use? I currently have Metro, General Cure and PP in stock. Can I use them in these types of fish?

Thanks in advance

I was always told don't medicate unless you see a problem so I don't. But this might help answer your question

Observe in qt. Some people will put a runt from the main tank into the qt tank before they transfer the qt fish into the main tank.

I suggest using Acriflavine upon receiving fish.....in case of ammonia burns, hurt body or slight bacteria infections to prevent any more secondary infections......my two cents.

Excellent thread, thanks for sharing. But it focuses more on discus QT, rather than tankmates QT. I might stick to observation.

Thanks, observation might the way to go then.

Thanks. Never heard of Acriflavine, will read more about it.

I prefer formalin/malachite green upon receiving especially if the fish have been through a rough trip. Secondary opportunistic pathogens can take a hold of them in that condition, esp. some protozoans.

Wild fish generally are less apt to have flukes than domestics, but have a greater chance of having tapeworms unless the discus were fed tubifex or blackworms. I used to treat for tapeworms all the time when getting new fish. Then I stopped buying from people who feed blackworms because tapeworms were so common in their fish along with other unwanted guests. I did recently purchase some CBW fed fish that I treated as a prophylactic measurement.

Overmedicating, mismedicating, etc. is a real problem for discus. However, there is nothing wrong with doing a round of treatment using proper protocol. A discus' liver or kidneys will not fail after being properly medicated in QT. I use very little meds at any other time and usually only have F/MG on hand regularly.

Here is another thread that I think does a great job in addressing quarantine.
