i was wondering if those clay flower pots turned upside down would work as breeding "cones" =p

$1 flower pot> $15 breeding cone =p

any dollar saved is money towards more discus =p

I use one of my wife's tall crystal flower vase. I topped it off with sand to add weight so it won't move. It works just fine. I bet you can find one around the house ... :D

It will cost you nothing ...

They will work, just not as well. If your serious about breeing discus penny pinching will be pointless. if you insist on saving a buck, PVC mounted to slate works better.

what do you mean not as well?

i planned to buy some cone from barbs but i dont want to waste 15 buck if i wont get a pair. the pot is more of a tester to see whs with who so i can remove accordingly

I used flower pots for years, but lately those at Walmart and Home Depot are treated with fungicide (you can smell in on the pots) that is not good for Discus. You can "cure" these pots by soaking them in water for long periods of time (not sure how long, but it took weeks last time I tried before the smell was gone). On a more practical level, a pot of the right size will be too big to get out through the half tops most people have on their tanks, making them much more difficult to get out to clean between spawnings, or if as you plan to use them, you keep them in a community tank much of the time. In the old days, pots were all we could easily get.

does the pot have to be a certain height?

Bare tank, they'll lay on the glass when they are ready...No, wait a minute..in the wild, they wait for a champagne bottle to drift by...

As many have suggested...Discus will lay on just about anything.
Many use the tall tapered cones because it allows a tighter-narrow spawning site and betters the chance male does not hit and miss.
Barb makes the best breeding cones hands down.

I use the tera-cota pots...the orange ones from walmart...works fine for me.

Especially as a tester!

I let them lay on the glass. Hans sent me a cone with a pr. of SS's and they laid on the glass anyway.
