I am certainly not a genetic expert but was wondering if it would be possible to get show quality offspring from non show quality parents? I'm not talking about fugly, mutt discus but still high quality parents of less than show quality. Thanks.

Someone got show quality fish that way to start with. Now your odds are low and it may take years and years to develop and you have to get some luck as well. The higher quality you start with the easier the road.

Yes. That happens in all show animals, not just fish. Think of it this way....Breeding the fastest race mare to the fastest race stallion rarely gives you the fastest baby. but the brother, sister, cousin, farther, etc....of the fastest horses often produce the best race horses. What is important is that you start with genetically good parents and work that line until you get what you are looking for.
