What are your thoughts on keeping discus in a 46 gallon? I was thinking of buying 4 juvies (1 3\4 inch) and growing them out till a pair forms, then just keeping the pair? Any other options?

Also, does anyone know where I could buy an adult pair, for a reasonable price??

Discus are a schooling fish,4 not enough to spread aggression, give decent odds on getting a pair,46gal,depending on foot print, not big enough in long run.5 is the number,6 is better, ten more better.

When you say in the long run, your talking about 5 or 6, or just the pair?

For a typical display tank 5 or 6 is the minimum in order to spread aggression. If you're truly planning to just have a pair of adults you'll have to dig deeper in your pockets in order to purchase them. You can spend as little as $450 for a proven pair, or take a chance with one of the reputable sponsors here and get a "possible pair" for $250 or so. Possible pairs aren't proven pairs though, and there's no guarantee that they will pair and will live happily together.

You can't just buy 4 discus and assume that you'll get a pair from them. My first discus purchase was 5 of them. Out of the five only one is a possible female and he/she isn't showing any signs of pairing off with any of the males. The second purchase was 4 discus, and of those only one is male, and he has had his battles in finding a mate. So out of 9 discus I got 2 proven pairs, two males from the first batch have paired with two females from the second batch.
