I'm looking for advice on pricing a used 120 gallon tank and stand. I know many people here check out Craigslist, etc and thought I could get an idea on a reasonable price for mine that I am considering selling since a couple of people have expressed interest in it. It's 48 X 24 X 24 and I drilled it for use with sump. The stand is a black, store bought cabinet solid wood (pine) stand. Thanks.

$1 a gallon for the tank, stand is worth very little even if you paid a lot for it. With stand and sump, no more than $150.

I agree with 1$ per gallon for the tank. If they want the stand and sump you need to make a seperate deal.

Do prices vary at all if the tank is acrylic or glass?

An acrylic in good condition is worth far more than a glass tank in good condition. That's based on cost as new. A dollar per gallon for glass in good shape is reasonable. HTH

Yes...for me at least!

Acrylic does not hols it's value at all, it is to easy to damage and to separate, also scratch, etc so to find a pristine acrylic tank is much more difficult than a glass tank. To convince someone to drive over to your place to check out your "mint" acrylic tank, the price needs to be very attractive, or else I wouldn't even bother. JMO

I agree with $1.00 per gallon and I am sure there are others who would disagree based on glass or acrylic.

As far as equipment goes, you can always search some websites like Foster & Smith, etc. to get a base idea of what people are selling.

I in fact purchased a 37 gallon tank, glass top and led lighting for a mear $50.00. The light was selling for $96.00 alone on F&S website and a few other websites. The tank was clean and had very minor scratches on the bottom.

When viewing a used tank, scratches alone in my opinion will dictate a price. Depending on the usage of course. If a display tank, you want it virtually scratch free. If a breeder tank, maybe you can get away with a few. So the more scratches, the less "per gallon" I would pay.

Using this information is just a guideline in my opinion, but can determine a good deal or a bad deal.

Hi Joanstone, I know you said you already had some folks interested, but another option is a donation. My husband is a Vietnam vet and is active with our local VA (Veteran's Admin). We are transitioning from a 60 gallon to a 120 gallon and the 60 is going to the VA. We were fishing at the river last night and I thought about, over the years, how much the fish have meant to him....whether in the sea, the river, the pond, or the aquariums. Just a thought.....

Yeah, maybe it's regional, but it seems extremely rare around here to get tanks over 55 gallons for a buck a gallon.

I just built a 20 gallon for under $10 (just for an experiment). You can repeat the process fairly easy. I got the information on how to build from a URAJOEY on you tube. He has a whole series of how to build acrylic and glass tanks and stands. He's out of Canada but very informative how to videos. I want to build a 150 gallon tank soon and will keep posted about my experience.

The one-dollar a gallon price depends entirely on your location. It is not carved in stone. Tank prices are higher in my area.
