just changed the wood around. removed the floating plants as they were starting to look bad. I suck with live plants so I'm trying fake for a while.

Why don't you try the plants that float on the top of the water? Like Duck weed, or others, any one can keep them, really. I even use Penny wort, which is the scourge of the Coastal Southern US for lawn care, it is called dollar weed when you are doing lawn care. I dig it up, wash it good, and it grows great on the top of the water, a fully aquatic plant, does the job that the plant life is suppose to do biofilter wise. If you change your mind, grab it, and toss it out.

I have tried frogbit, water lettuce, and pennywort. the pennywort will last for a while but gets stringy. it might be because plants need nitrates and my tank is never above 5ppm. don't want duckweed. had it years ago in another tank and it's just a mess. I also have a lot of surface aggitation, which may affect the frogbit.
rubinsteinnyc, tank is 120 gal (48x24x24). Ehiem and xp3 cannisters. recently change to all led's but pics are taken with 2 overhead flashes.

When you think your tank cannot get better, surprise! The new setup looks great. Your tank will remain as an inspiration when I establish a new tank. What exactly did you do for the background? Did you just paint it? What color is that? it gives a nice sense of depth.

I've never had success with floaters either, especially frogbit. Not sure if its my LEDs or what, grew in my other tank fine....but that had a 10k T5 on it. Very nice tank as usual!

it's just a black background. the surface movement will cause shadows when the flashes are used. does'nt look like that normally tho I wish it would.

I like using tiger lilies in show tanks, they only grow up streamers that don't get in the way of the fish and the pads on top provide shade and make it very natural for the discus.
