what color sand would you go with, black or white?

never black.. it makes them get DARK..

Neither... use a neutral beige sand...something like a silica pool filter sand. If you go white, it'll always look dirty once things start growing on it.

I use Nature's Ocean pink #2. It's actually a nice and natural beige color with some pink shell fragments mixed into it. #2 because it's a coarser grain so when I run my syphon over it I lose minimal amounts of sand.

I have black sand in my community tank, and white sand in my discus tank! The white sand is way more beautiful than the black sand. That pink sand sounds like a winner too. I'll have to try that next time!
