Was wondering why more people are not buying raffle tickets to support NADA? Are people just not aware?

Check out this thread:

I bought 10 tickets, I have NO room. But if I win these you can be dam sure I'll fine/make room!!! I don't expect to, but I want to support NADA.

The winner does have the option to donate the prize back to NADA to draw or raffle again, as well as the option to give or donate the prize to another person or club.

Bad timing kinda, a week later, fish order, fish tanks, and another paycheck after two raffles would be good :) how you space them makes a difference to some of us.

And I don't buy tickets unless i'm going to make it worthwhile. If its still going Friday then its budgeted in!

I think its because they prefer to get the extremely over priced LFS discus. You know, the ones that have 5 fins in deaths door. LOL :p

I would love to but just started working again after a long winter, kids all needed clothes, just bought 14 juvies, and don't think I will make the deadline for the ticket sale with my next pay.

Well let’s analyze this. $5 gets you a one in 500 chance of winning. Or to be sure of winning you would need to buy ALL the tickets for a total cost of $2,500. Is the prize worth $2,500? If not, other than supporting NADA (a worth endeavor), why would one buy a ticket? It’s a suckers bet.

Got it all figured out don't you? You made a critical error in your calculation however. There were three prizes given away, making it a 3 in 500 chance. Eight fish given away total, all having a value of at least 200 dollars or more. Now, go recalculate ;)

The only way you increase your odds is buying more tickets, you can't look at it that way. It's still a 1 in 500 chance. Not to mention. Your paying 2500$ for 1600$ of fish? 8x2 =16.

Not to nitpick but technically you don't increase your odds, you increase your chances. Each ticket still has a one in five hundred possibility of winning (odds), with 5 tickets you have a greater chance at the same odds. :)

Actually Hans gave the 1st and 2nd place winners the option to pick proven pairs which are $600 for the pair. So the total value of the deal was $2000.

Plus the cost of shipping, all in all its a very good ratio for a fund raiser!

No, It's not a 1 in 500 chance its a 3 in 500 chance. Three prizes.

You can't get win all three prizes with one ticket dude, It's 1 in 500. It's out of 500 entries not 500 prizes. You buy one ticket, its 1 in 500.... Rod said it best though with the odd and chances. Anyways I didn't buy any tickets so I've got a 0 in 500 chance.

Slowly now.......

You buy 1 ticket. You have 1 ticket out of 500.

There are three prizes each with nearly identical value.

Prize number one. One ticket gets drawn for a prize. Your chances of winning this prize is exactly one in 500. Your ticket doesn't get drawn. Its still in the for the drawing for prize number two.

Drawing number two. You didn't get drawn for prize number one, so that SAME ticket is now in the hopper to be picked from 499 tickets.

Drawing number three. You didn't get drawn for prize number two, so that SAME ticket is now in the hopper to be picked from 498 tickets.

That is THREE chances to be picked for a prize out of 500 tickets sold, not one chance. The fact you can't win all three prizes doesn't have any bearing on the odds of winning, only the value of the prize won. The odds of winning all three prizes is exactly 0, no matter how many tickets you bought.

At any rate, the whole purpose of my thread was to draw attention to a great cause and a chance to win some nice fish for those people on the forum that might not plan on attending NADA and as a result don't visit the thread and might not be aware of the raffle. It wasn't to debate the odds of winning, nor to discuss what a waste of money it was to purchase a ticket. I am sorry some people took it that way.
