I have a tank that has been running approx 6 weeks. 2 weeks ago I added a few lemon tetras to it and prior to that there was nothing but pool filter sand and 2 large manzanita pieces in it.

I have a fluval 405 cannister filter on the tank (85 gal fluval) and the tank has no lid on it. I'm getting a biofilm on top of the water that I've never had before in any of my tanks. The fluval filtration does not break the surface of the water, but I don't think that's the issue. This is the first tank I've had with no lid, is that the issue?

When I stick my hand in the water and break the surface of the water, the film breaks up into small white pieces. It's disgusting. The ammonia is 0, nitrite 0, and nitrate ~20ppm. I don't have discus in the tank yet.

Any ideas?

Point you inlet up to break the surface or get an airstone that should fix the problem
