From people's suggestions, I'm going to ditch the metal halides. I really want to keep the shimmer effect, so I'm thinking LED's or those curly CFL bulbs. I'm only looking to keep a few plants, so what lighting would be recommended for a 125?

Looks like they have a specific one for planted tanks...
Would the 48"-60" unit be sufficient for a low tech system on a 125gal?

or the double bright?

dang it, can't post links yet.

I use AquaticLife 4 bar T5HO. Works great. Have changed bulb combos a few times but I love the timer built right in 2 the light. But they make LEDs,T5s, & other types of lights.

Check these out, I had 4 of these on my 55g and plants were doing great. Now have 14 of them on my 480g tank and still enough light. http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&category=BARS&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2Fwlfa2_specs.htm
