I dont know what makes a discus a scorpion vs the regular version. Can anyone some light on this? I'm my goal is to visually tell the difference between all strains.

TURQ.. your the man!

scorp's need a few things to be 'scorp's..a solid colored parent (BD is one, Cobalt another), and a 14 bar Snakeskin. The pattern becomes more 'spotted' that 'striated'. The easiest ID is the characteristic Snakeskin fine 'squiggly' pattern onb the gill covers.without a SS in their background, you can't have a Scorpion...HTH...Gary

Turq64 is right.

White Scorpion, Blue Scorpion, and Golden Scorpion. That is all I know.

Eddie had some Red ones when he was living in Japan. He called them Solid Red SSs. They looked to be a SS San Merah cross. Wish I could get those beautiful fish out of my mind.

So, can you breed two Blue Scorpions together and get Blue Scorpion offspring? (Be gentle, I'm new)

is there a recipe book for creating strains ????

but serious question

If you were to breed 2 Blue Scorpions I expect you'd get a mix of BDs, SSs, and Scorpions. They can't really be considered a strain because they won't breed true.

Liz, would you consider a Scorpion a "throw back"? I was breeding a pair of BDSS. The outcome is BD, BDSS and Scorpions, correct? I called the Scorpions a throw back but thinking about it that may not be right. But then again there seems to be several definitions of throw back.

No, it's not a throw back. It's a cross. The genes of the parents blend rather that being dominent or recessive to one another

Would you technically call it a Scorpion SS since it is a 14 bar.

Interesting question and now we need some pictures to go with the breakdown of the strains and their strain line (parents).

YOu could, I guess but it would be redundent. Scorpion implies 14 bars. If it does't have 14 it's not a Scorpion.

Pictures are easy. Just google Scorpion discus.

With years of selective scorpion breeding could you ever get them to breed true?

no.....While it has not been proven in a scientific way I am about 99.99% sure that a double snake skin gene combination is a lethal combination. That has what has preventing anyone from having a 100% true snakeskin line.

Ok let me post pic of my Grandfather blue Scropion Now I have a proven breeding pair of blue Scropion Now I have few babies blue scropion I bred them by me.

The Orginal was cobalt x Blue SS. and blue Diamond x Blue Snakeskin. The offspring I selected the CobaltSS and Blue DiamondSS become a blue Scropion SS.

The first Blue SS were really nice. the parents are nice but they are not much colors as the first one. The offspring are the same as the parents. I dont see many BD or cobalt I would say 80% blue SS other 20% are BD or cobalt.

This is first one I crossed breed between blue diamond SS and cobalt SS. It turned out very nice.

The offspring turned out a proven breeding pair from the parents.

I crossed breed from Dad was the RSS and Mom was the BSS. I have only one is turned out very nice. I am very impressive with nice colors and pattern.
