sponge filter vs air stone question!!!

I have just hooked up my new sponge filter. It is working in conjunction with my penquin HOB. My question is....do I still need an air stone, or is there enough air produced with the sponge filter? :confused:

The sponge will be enough, provided you have enough air volume to drive it..

Not sure I understand correctly. Looks like you use your sponge filter as a prefilter for HOB. I think it's fine as long as you have enough air produced by HOB. Otherwise, I like air pump driven sponge filter.

TO CLEARIFY......I HAVE A SPONGE FILTER ON ONE SIDE OF THE TANK, AND A HOB, WITH A PREFILTER SPONGE ATTACHED TO IT, ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE TANK. WHEN I HOOKED UP THE SPONGE FILTER, I DISCONNECTED MY AIR STONE, THINKING THAT THE SPONGE FILTER CREATED ENOUGH AIR. IS MY THINKING CORRECT, OR DO I NEED AN AIR STONE ALONG WITH THE SPONGE FILTER?

So long as your air pump is rated for your tank you won't need to add any extra aeration. I use 2 110 air pumps on my 115 to run my 2 sponge filters. Since each air pump has 2 outlets, I used a tee to connect themon each pump and run that single airline tubing to a sponge.

That's the important part... making sure that you use a big enough air pump for your tank.

I take about 1" of air line hook that to your air stone then hook that up to the nipple inside of the sponge filter tiny bubbles gives more water flow and O2.
