Forming the MWDA

I had been kicking this idea around for a while now and i decided to start sending pm's out to the people in the area of which this group would concern. I got about 20 or so people into it and decided at this would be a much easier and faster method to get the word out. I have a few people who i have contacted already and said they are interested and would participate. I understand not everyone will want to do this and the people who do want to do this will not be able to make it to every function. I'm not asking that. I think it would be nice for our region to have a fun group where we can get together every 3-4 months talk fish, hang out and get to know each other better. Please let me know what you think of this. Thank you for your responses and input!

I would like to include it to everyone in the Midwest. And possibly have different people host the meeting instead of having it in one location making it difficult for some to make. I would like to have a meeting or discussion about what we would like to do and get out of our group. And possibly try to get a list of some fish clubs in this surrounding areas letting them know about our new club. What I would really like to see form would be a solid group of a few people to help plan and organize meetings And events. I wanted to see how many people were interested in something like this to give them a chance uf they wanted to be really involved or just a member. So I'm basically waiting to see what the general interest is for now.

I've got at least a half a dozen people who said they'd be interested, I suggested a spring and a fall meeting. Also have one person who's a planner who would make a great chair and organized enough to do NADA in 2016 in Chicago if that's a goal.

So to take this thread a somewhat different direction, put certainly in line with the subject line. RockRiverFish (Dan) is a member of both the Madison and Milwaukee fish clubs. He's kept (is keeping?) and bred a multitude of different fish species. He's a planner and organizer, and was I believe a big part of the ACA show happening up here a couple years ago. So he's my nominee to lead this venture.

I spend allot of time at the Midwest Cichlid ***. site and most of the members I see are from Ne,Mn and Ia. lol apparently my association abbreviation was considered a bad word by our site software!

I see that Keith has introduced me, so I figured I better get involved. Sorry that it took my a while, but I don't get on-line as often as I would like.

Thanks for the kind words Keith, but I'm just an average hobbiest and a novice when it comes to discus. I keep mostly South American and African cichlids, but I have always had a soft spot for discus and have managed to keep a few alive. I'm a very "small fish" when compared to some of the other members of those clubs.

My home club (Milwaukee Aquarium Society) did host the 2010 ACA convention, but I was mostly just a grunt. I did learn alot from the chairpersons, and would be happy to lend a hand wherever I can.

An October meeting would work for me, and I look forward to meeting everyone in person. I would also be happy to host a future meeting.

I like Great Lakes too, but probably wouldn't if I was in Iowa. MWDA is probably a little more inclusive, and as far as defining region goes I'd say if you feel like you live in the MW you're qualified/welcome.

Just a general comment here. I think its great that you guys are forming this group. We've had our NEDA going steady now in the Northeast for pretty much the last 10 years with several meetings a year, sometimes more , sometimes less.Sometimes 10 people, sometimes 50. WE've had formal ones with speakers, and Back yard barbeques with fireworks, pool parties ,pigroasts and homebrew. A word of caution, Its easy to put the horse before the cart, and they'll always be some that will want to take a group like yours down a path where its very formal and strigent. ..nothing wrong with that model. It works well for many fish clubs...but it also has alot of drawbacks..weigh them both very well.

I think the most important thing you guys can do is just plan a date, get together informally and see if you mesh...See if you have a good group of people ready to take on leadership roles and see what the general consensus of the people that show up there is as to what this great new group's direction is. Talk is cheap, and usually what it comes down to is a handful of people doing all the work or the venture flops on its face.

I agree..with brew. Not easy getting firm commitments. Especially if you want to work toward nada.
Meet a few times and see how it goes. Advertise locally also and see if you can find non simply members. Advertise via other local clubs, fish stores, local forums, community centers , Craigslist etc. when you have a large area it's not easy getting enough people togeather .
We had a new club for all fish here in Vancouver. It lasted not even a year. Great ideas etc...then the two head people had health problems with family and it dissolved.

Al, April - thanks a lot for your posts. You put into words a lot of the same thoughts/concerns I've been having and I'm glad such experienced voices of reason spoke them. I think we've got at least a few natural leaders/workers in the group, so I'd hope our chances of being successful are fairly decent. Forming now should give us plenty of time to see where we stand in 2014 to see if an application for the 2016 NADA show is realistic.

Your welcome. You are in a good area for the nada show. I believe minneapolis is a major transfer point for shipping fish around the country. I know when I got fish from
Cary they transferred there then onto Vancouver. Also close to the Canadian border???? Who knows maybe I'll get to the next one!

Chicago has to be a major hub as well. Milwaukee is just North and would be a possibility, Rockford, IL., lots of Midwest options. Not ruling anything out at this point. Willie would have to join the MWDA if we'd consider Minneapolis. :) I still owe him a beer from the Wi ACA show a couple years back.

What about flyer at pet stores we trust, stores such as the one Bill was mentioning in another thread, the one Josie fixed, there is one by me.

If you all want to or care I can make some black and white flyers and send them out as attachments, everyone can print what we need...etc etc you get the idea but I would need at the least the time and, if not the address, then the town.

I had several thoughts when I saw your post Dan. First thought, I've no idea what the protocol is for your idea. Second thought, Josie would definitely have to approve. You most definitely want to run that by Josie first. Having discus from several different sources into her house in which she just recently started a import resale business has its risk (for Josie). I would hate to see something go wrong and her stock be introduced to a pathogen they have not yet encountered.

I just slept down there one night two weekends ago. The oldest was here with her family, the youngest of which is 5 weeks, and her mother didn't want her sleeping on an air mattress. I took the couch and I didn't get enough air into the air mattress. Oops.

With a towel over the newest spawns tank, and the brine shrimp tank, and if I remember to pull the plug on the lamp on the timer, and the 21 year old doesn't forget and turn on the light, or tramp through at o'dark thirty, it's not too bad. The T.V. is awesome. For a guy that would equalize everything else.

There are a lot of Packer fans involved, we require a lot of pre-gaming. Maybe the one after Austin. I can see negotiating with the hotel. We'll be requiring a vacant parking lot area for a tailgating event.

Lol all I have to say is people can suprise you with dishes they make. I've learned to never underestimate anyone when it comes to cooking. Some people will focus on one dish and kick butt at it and can't cook anything else. Others are good at lots of things.

Time for a pre-weekend bump and a little house keeping. While having breakfast with Bill last weekend he mentioned no one has responded to whether or not they are bringing spouses/significant others. It sounded like his wife would like to come but definitely didn't want to be the only one, so please respond with that info next to your name.

It sounds like the rib war should provide plenty of entrees, but side dishes would be awesome. Give it some thought. Maybe we will end up adding that information to the list below as well. The event will definitely be BYOB, maybe we can exchange a few leftovers of local stuff at the end of the day. Hope to see you all Oct 6, and invite others who haven't made it onto the list yet.
