Lets say you have a batch of 40-50 fry which you would like to grow out. Once they are separated from parents, I need to decide what tanks to put them in. I was planning on having the following:

One large tank of 55G and another tank of 28G. Another option would be having three 28G tanks.

I would like your views on which of the two options you think is best.

thanks!

The space is limited so I can't add more tanks than what I mentioned. If need be, I'll reduce the number of fry to grow.

Yep, ill cull the bad ones and give away others to avoid having my tanks overcrowded. My question is... would it be better to have a 55 and 28G or three 28G tanks?

there is no right answer..

work with what you got or can..

you will have some slow growers and fast growers and no growers..

go with what system is best for you.. and then adjust as you need.. is 2 tanks easier to clean and maintain.. or 3?

The rule is 10 gal/fish. U you can cut that down buy doing more water changes. You have to be carefull as to not to stunt or slow down there groth. 40 or 50 fry at weening will be fine in a 28 gal for a few weeks. I normaly pull the pair not the fry at weening. they seem to do better as a large school and at about 4 weeks will doubble there size. After that go to a 55/75 at 2/2.5 inches i do my first cull. another at 3/3.5 by then i will be at 12/14. keep what you want (max 6 or 7) sale the rest. The fry can be weened as soon as they are bbs real good. Have rasid spawns of over 350 fry. Jerry

I say 75g and 28g. Bigger the tank for the little ones the better. At 50-60 fry you dont need a 75g tank since maybe only 75% of them should make it to adulthood after culling. But like deepflys example if you start getting spawns of 2-300+ youre always going to wish you had a bigger tank

10 gallons per fry???? So if one has 50 fry, one needs a 500 gallon tank for grow-out to 2.5 inches????

No not 10 gal/fry. but they will not be fry for long. Like i posted above you can go with a 29 gal with 40/50 fry for mabe a mounth. It depends on you and your water change plan. My fry are in the 2 inch range at 7/8 weeks. AS a rule i pull my pair at about 3 weeks, if its a big spawn 200+ i might pull them sooner depending on the the pair say 2 weeks. I feed my fry starting on the 5th day of attachment baby brime shrinp. i do this about 4 or 5 times/day. I also grind up color bits with a pepper mill for them. they should start eatting well in a couple days. Jerry
