Al is indisposed, so I'm documenting through videos here...until it can be moved to the appropriate area.

If I don't do this, I'll forget videos at some point.

Water conditions. 70 TDS
I use 'safe' to dechlorinate
Water changes vary, but 20 -75% per day (most days). I'll skip a day on rare occasion if things get too busy.

I start by feeding baby brine shrimp
I remove the babies pretty quick from the parents (14 days or so)
Another 14 days and I move to golden pearls
And then a varied diet from that point on.

Alex Piwow parents
I will start with pictures of the parents. The male is a straight line
The female is a weirdo. Past batches show the babies end up looking like the father

We will call these guys '0' day old (first day free swimming)
The aquarium is dirty. I don't do many water changes, hoping they attach

Here is my timeline.

Most people seem to go by 'free swimming' for aging (from what i can tell)
Mine lay eggs. 55 hours they will hatch. roughly 4 days of 'wiggling' on the side of the cone is followed by 48 hours wandering the tank before they attach (above)
You could easily argue these are a week old, but one day 'free swimming'

You will notice only the male in these pictures. My female eats the eggs about 40% of the time, so I often remove her. This male is an excellent parent

May 22nd, when I heard about the contest. (i took a video of a weather map from online with the date on the bottom)

5 days old
You can't tell much difference. They went from long, narrow little slivers to barely starting to look like fat tadpoles
I start brine shrimp on day 4 or 5 of free swimming. They don't normally eat it yet, but I have it in the tank

My male really hates this camera. You can see brine shrimp in the water. Also the babies are starting to flatten out a bit and look like fish

Sidenote: All of my fish become very dark when breeding

You can see the babies are starting to 'round' out a little bit

May 28th = 11 days old
Removed from male and in their own aquarium
Maybe a little early...but I had the female paired with another male that created eggs. I wanted this male as the surrogate parent

The largest one is almost the size of a dime. Not as tall, though.

They have been moved to a 20 gallon 'tall' aquarium

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvG6UxFcVFo

I do frequent, small water changes. I feed as much baby brine shrimp as I have time to put in the tank

Surprisingly slow growth, frankly. I usually feed a bit more brine shrimp. But they're all looking healthy

The smallest are the length of a dime (maybe not quite as tall). Some are larger than dimes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6WtFj-7mXk

Note. No culling, to date. There are probably 7? runts I could pick out. Usually, they'll die when I transition to golden pearls

Still eating brine shrimp, but i'm trying to transition to golden pearls
They aren't happy about it

June 11th, 25 days old

This is the first day I've seen any eating golden pearls. That means I'll quit brine shrimp and force all of them to eat them

I'd guess 2/3 are longer and taller than dimes, at this point. 1/3 are close to the size of a dime

I made a second move, from a 20 gallon tall to a regular 55 gallon
Maintaining the 20 gallon was becoming a chore (dirty looking water shortly after cleaning)
This 55 should serve them for 2 or 3 months before I need to split them up again

June 17th update
So, what? 31 days old?
One month old?

The smallest one is probably the size of the penny, maybe slightly larger
The largest one is almost twice the size of the penny

June 22nd update
36 days old.

These poor guys were abused over the last 3 days. One feeding a day, one water change a day.
I moved to a new house and here is the start of the fish room.
So, now they're back to multiple feedings and water changes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqIGnLBEtE4

And another, 38 days old (today)
Automatic water changing setup almost completed

Sounds good.

Harry Marsh
06-28-2012, 09:30 PM
40 days old, today?

More progress on fish room
100% well water, no chlorine
58 TDS

Lots of water changes (automatic system putting water in, draining excess)
When I start to trust the system, I anticipate 100% water changes per day with no work

Anyway, some of these guys might already be three inches with tail

Ps. Yes, the wife was adding unknown commentary to this video
Pps. That is a penny taped to the back of the tank

Nasty heat wave. We're hiding for the weekend...and let the a/c do battle with the weather.

I've got maybe 40? juvies. I'll try to count. Maybe 50
There are also 8 or so juvies from a different pair in that tank (hence the really small guys)
Same female from a month later, but a different male.

I've got someone picking up a few this weekend that has been begging for them for a while.
I don't know if I'll sell any more. I'm concerned. I've only had one spawning in the new house with the new water (a day after we moved in). I'm hoping all gets back on track, soon.

Totally understand! That's the beauty of breeding your own fish, you can decide what to do with them. If you change your mind please let me know. Hope you figure out the water or transition challenges with your fish. Wish the best.

Rick

Potentially true. And do I remember narrowing it down further, when they get bigger? At what age and how many?
We should clarify. 10 or 12 of mine in the videos are from a later spawn: they will be smaller and not in this competition - just keeping them in there out of simplicity

I see your point though, someone with 60 could be at an advantage over someone with 30
....not sure I'd care though...kudos to you if you have the space to grow out that many

yea. understood to be at most 30 to start with when dime size..

Harry Marsh

Warlock alerted me that these are not 3" fish.
I guess you're overly optimistic when you dont pull out a ruler. Upon measuring, the largest are a shade over 2"
He was definitely right.

Regardless, I'm now down to 30 in this tank. I have tried to count a few times: pretty sure I'm at 30, exactly. I put the smaller fish from a later spawn in their own aquarium (and culled a few obvious fish with defects)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01SAZVV7u6M

The fish room is getting nicer and nicer. And I've got my first spawn from my reliable female.
She didn't like the usual male and choose a different one for this spawn

Thanks :) They look nicer in better light. But, I don't have time for show tanks any longer

I'm going to make an effort to make better videos. Here is the first (longer, with less jerky movements)
I've noticed the previous videos were annoying to watch.

PS. Looks like I'll have some Albino Leopards via Mike Beals, soon. Today, those laid eggs (you can see the male fighting off the piwowarski Cobalt)
I wasn't really looking for these....but the coloration has grown on me
I suppose I'll have to make a tank for them....

More progress on the fish room, too.

Unfortunately, the albino leopards ate the eggs almost immediately. The red turks ate them on day two. I moved the albino's beside the red turk pair, hoping they will learn something on the next go
Instead, I've had the two pair battling at the glass divider for the last week. Very little breeding activity.

Nope, no wild discus here. :)
The Cobalt (blue) and Red Turquoise are all Alex Piwowarski fish from Germany

More eggs!
These from my favorite colored male (straight lines)
I put the female in the community tank: she has been eating the good eggs of late and leaving the fungus'd eggs
This male usually does pretty good (leaves all eggs)

Those are german discus. Much speculation to believe they're bred with wild discus to bring out those bright colors

Update video
54 days old. Almost 8 weeks

I took this using a camera, so the quality should be much better.
2.5 inches or so? (including tail)

When should we be narrowing down to 8?
I definitely have some short gill plates. But I think I can find 8 nice ones

Nice!! As for the red, I have a juvy that looked similar after a run in with the tank glass.

Harry Marsh
07-22-2012, 10:21 PM
Thanks Jen
That's what I suspected, but wanted confirmation

They fight hard for food: despite me feeding them 10+ times a day (I drop food in every time I walk by)
I imagine the ruddy faces are from fights, run-ins with glass, etc

Another video from yesterday

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npuc-oGajPU

All looking well except for one smaller, black little guy
I haven't culled him yet because he has decent shape (just small, dark in color)
Plenty of others could probably be culled (beaks, football shape, short gill plates, etc)
There are 10 solid fish with no complaints, another 10 that might turn into nice fish.
10 will probably be given to a neighbor

I've got the tank space...so I'm not culling much. I'd prefer to grow them out and cull at a later period

yusufm52
07-23-2012, 08:29 PM
nice to see the progress, the small and dark one, is it the one in the corner of the tank in the video

Harry Marsh
07-29-2012, 08:37 PM
Here is a pic that shows the culls, in the top left.
I flushed two of them today. One was a runt for sure. The other had some swimming problem. The third, I put in another tank with some other undesirables that will get a last chance at life. I've had a few end up as nice fish: just undersized compared to the rest and a little slow to develop. The third will have another month to get some nice shape.

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/6065/culls.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/14/culls.jpg/)

So, there are 27 left. I probably need to go down to the '8' this week. Have the rules been posted, yet?

Harry Marsh
07-29-2012, 08:40 PM
A few update pictures. I'm starting to see that the pictures are nicer than the videos.
It will be easier to do a comparison in the future with logged pictures every week, rather than videos.

You will notice some planaria on the glass. I had visitors this weekend and only cleaned the aquarium once in three days = breakout
Annoying.
I think I feed far too much on the weekends (every time I walk by the aquarium). The little beggars are just so cute, though....

Second Hand Pat

Harry, the rules have not been posted yet to my knowledge. I am going to do the down select to 8 also. I would have this weekend but found I needed some extra airline for hooking up another sponge filter.

Your guys are starting to develop some color.

Harry Marsh
07-31-2012, 09:23 PM
Culled two, today....after much consideration.

I found two smaller guys that had eyes that were abnormally large. I wouldn't call them runts, but they were lagging behind the others. They were also a bit darker and not as lively.
I have a few smaller that I will keep because they're still nicely proportioned....but these seemed a bit below the normal quality

I also started to reduce down to 8. I now have 15 in the tank (moved 10 or so to another tank)
The gill plate 'problem' seems to be less significant at this time. I had trouble removing the 10 or so...and basically just took out the smaller fish

I measured one of the larger fish (netted and measured), it was just a tad over 2.5"
So, 2.5" at day 71 is my growth rate

08-05-2012, 05:47 PM
Harry, thanks again for the little guys!!! They started eating within 15 minutes of getting into their new home! I'm hoping those little guys end up growing to even just half of the size that your RT's are. All of them were pretty damn big! I was even surprised how big the female is! You and your wife were so nice to let me drop in on the weekend to retrieve them. Thank you sooooo much and can't wait to grow them out! -Pastry

p.s.-Good luck in the contest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A bit low: 70
I do add a bit of calcium from time to time, though.
I currently have eggs and would like to try a 'batch b' with higher TDS
Not a cull: just one of them being shy for a third picture

I notice a few significant negatives to putting them in their own tank. They're not nearly as active eaters. More apt to get scared, etc.

Yup, it is quite the learning experience.

True true. I guess it is realistic, though. Most people won't buy more than 8 fish
However, it's another vote of confidence for trusting a sponor who raises a lot of these fish: they feel more comfortable in numbers
I'm kinda thinking about putting them in a tank with a divider. Might make them more comfortable

I put the fish in a split 75 gallon aquarium.
I continued to be unhappy with these 8 in a 55 gallon tank. One or two of them was always turning dark in color and looking unhealthy
The other 30 or so in the other tank are looking much better (never dark, very aggressive for food)

So, I put these 8 beside some outcasts from long ago (my first batch of fry, that may or may not be stunted)
I had tried to raise this batch on artificial food before giving up and buying brine shrimp eggs (middle picture)
I'm hoping with the 8 seeing others...they can settle in and feel more comfortable

Yup, we should have pushed this '8' separation date to 4" or so
But, I guess that isn't the purpose of the competition.

Mine are starting to look better. As they get bigger, they're getting more brave and healthy
That was just ab it young to separate, IMO

Harry.. What size tank u got them in?

I first had them in a 55

Now, I've put them in a split 75 with some others on the other side. That seems to have helped
I'll move back to the 55 when they get larger

harry, those little guys are looking good. meanwhile, i got 5 of the ones from the batch that was hatched after your contest batch. by any chance do you remember "round about" when they were born? i've been meaning to ask you.

as for as how they're doing, they're eating like pigs! unfortunately i have them addicted to blood worms and beefheart but i'm trying to get them on flakes. the 2 culls i took off your hands are trying their best to catch up with the others. they're the first ones to my hand when i start feeding so they have hope. who knows, maybe one will turn into a swan. i can't wait until all of them start to color up. i kind of enjoy how it's MUCH slower than most breeds. for lack of better words (and I'm sure I'll catch hell or wierd looks from this... but it's just an analogy) it's like "foreplay"! alright, well good luck with your 8 and hope they turn out as good as the breeders you have.-- Elliot

About 30-40 fry lived, which I can live with

I've been doing some testing to try and figure out what happened: I think it's the brine shrimp
I tested my water when I woke, this morning: very high ammonia. No ammonia last night.
No other tanks with high ammonia (including the juvie tanks, with far more fish)

Before sleep, I give the fry 3 decent sized portions of brine shrimp (thinking that will tide them over until morning)
I think the mass die-off of brine shrimp got me. I've been having this problem for a long time and unable to figure it out
in 8/10 batches, Day 10 and half the fry die overnight.

Next batch (if ever), I will adjust and not do that regime. Feed less brine shrimp or do a water change after feeding

Regardless, i'm happy with another 30 or so fish if they make it :)
And relatively happy that I have a suspect in why the fry die

Harry Marsh

Take a look at that timeline, pastry: You can see yours starting to look like those at a certain date.
These guys are slow to develop. I'll post a picture in a minute with some stunted fish I kept from a year ago. They're exploding in color (finally). Video coming soon, so you can see those.
I wish I had kept more from this batch....but they're hard to hold onto. It's crazy: i have as much demand for the stunted ones as anything (they stay smaller)

I had moved the contest fish to that 55, but they weren't being perky

I moved them back to the 35 cube, where they seem happy again. They'll get a larger aquarium eventually. It should probably be sooner than later: they're hard to keep clean in this smaller one

Good grief, Harry. I thought you said they were slow to get color? I have a feeling you'll be holding on to that one in the last picture (need I say which one?). Out-freak'n-standing. As a whole group... SOLID. They already have a nice base color developing throughout the entire body... I'm jealous. I'll probably do an update on mine next weekend.

A quick tape measure showed 4.5" on the one I grabbed, which was one of the larger ones (most are pretty close)

I used to want all straight-line fish
But, I don't mind spotted turks either: as long as they have the red base
I have a few runts that are very pretty spotted turks. a 6" one would be very neat

Thanks for the comments: It's a lot of work
As they grow larger, it's a lot more maintenance. These daggone things can poop a surprising amount

One day I will purchase my first Piwow Straight line turq and have what you enjoy now ;)... BTW with raising these juvi did you that find two daily WC really makes a difference in their growth? right now I'm raising my juvie with 50% in the morning and 100% at night and really notice that my current batch is growing even faster than my last with just 50% daily.

The red base is getting brighter and brighter. They are somewhere around 185 days old, at this point.

A few not showing much, yet. I hope it to start coming in on all of the fish within a month
They're definitely slower to develop than the asians. The biggest fish here is near 4.5" (and the color of a 2" asian)

Had a dead one Friday night. I'm down to 7

I've been working long hours and hadn't paid much attention to the fish (other than water changes and feeding)
If I had watched them for a few minutes, maybe I would have seen something awry?

I woke up Friday night to feed some babies brine shrimp and noticed this guy near the top: heater burn mark on his body and swollen stomach.
I don't know which happened first (titanium heater meeting, or swollen belly)
Regardless, he was a floater by morning.
From what I can remember, he this fish was a bit smaller than the other fish with average color. Nothing interesting either way

Two days later, I finally found a tape measure.
I had been wanting to measure a few, but not like this

On the other hand, I usually expect one dead fish or two out of a batch. So, no complaint. If the others live and do well, I'll count this a success

Anyway, shrunken body and this guy measures 4.25". I bet he was a bit bigger Friday night. He was shrunken and warped when I measured.
He was probably #5 in size. So, I'd bet my largest fish is just under 5". the smallest fish just over 4"
No complaint. And no complaint with the size of these fish, as long as they grow another 2" or so in the next few months :)

Harry, great to see an update. I need to take some pics soon of my little guys I got from you. It's like I blinked and they all of a sudden have crazy colors. I was moving one of the culls back to the main tank (not cull due to growth rate but more due to dorsal fin) and it was exactly 4 inches on the ruler, from tail to mouth. The two normal guys are getting closer and closer to 5" when seeing them next to that cull. The are really contrasting nicely with my VR's and RC's (of which I have two VR/RC pairs breeding like crazy; the eggs and fry are super red... never saw that on non-albino fish).

Thanks for the updates and I'll try to do my best to send you some posts soon!

I've sold 30/40 fish in the last week. I'm trying to keep these fish, but looks like I may have no chance

Sorry to hear that, have you checked if you can increase the well depth but I guess it is going to cost a lot.
