Hi everyone! first I'd like to start showing the fish:

The male is a "White Diamond" (that was the strain or name given to the fish I don't know any background of the fish sorry)

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh300/Doming275/leopard%20white%20angel/2-1.jpg

The female is a "Velvet Red" (Is the one on the bottom)

Why white diamond has yellow and blue on it? and female look like red melon to me ...

Red melons don't have white faces rdiscus. Should get some red/whites out of this cross with maybe some random yellow thrown in. alot will depend on the genetics of the white diamond, but it does appear to be pb based (as is the velvet red).

Am I seeing a 50% split between white based and darker fry?

Rick

I think your right Rick, and from what I know about white base they are as strong as pigeon. So if that is the case than the darker ones are what pigeon's that are really peppered? Something else I wonder is the male does look white base, but don't white base stay solid white I know they have the blue glow, but I thought other than that they were solid white. I don't know that is one I know very little about is white based fish, that is why I told Arturo to post it here to get other people in that know more about what this could be?

I am pretty sure all it means at this point is the male (white daimond) is heterozygous for the white gene (only has one). The white based fish do have a tendeny to mask pepper, but it's to early to tell if the darker ones are heavily peppered. They could be as clean as a whistle, they just don't have the white gene.

There are several white based pb that are not solid white, red/whites and ogon yellows to name a few.

Who say Red melons don't have white faces? What is this ?

Looks like a velvet red :)

When I thihnk red melon I think of a fish like this:

http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?94493-Please-rate-my-red-melon-%28female%29&p=873956#post873956

Alot of breeders will apply a different name when the face is white. In your example the breeder choose not to. Long story short, they are very simular (velvet red, red melon, etc) and it's all part of the name game.

rdiscus, Rick is right in most cases Red Melons don't have a nice white face, the ones you are showing are not full grown and IME most younger Red Melons are not solid red. The fish Arturo has he got from a Sponsor on SD and they were being sold as Velvet Red's. I would like to see an adult Red Melon that has a very white face and deep red body like Arturo's fish. Allot of red pigeons are allot alike but again if you look at an adult Red Melon they really look nothing like a Velvet Red IMO.

Updates: First I'd like to mention that the fry is 12 days old, it was never feed with brine shrimp at all I usually do feed my fry with it but this time I was in vacation for a week plus they didn't get wc for 3 days after I got back (5th July) I was so busy so I just start feeding them with some flakes they start eating little by little so i decide to skip the brine shrimp and then i feed them my home made beef heart mix and they love it so here a video of them eating enjoy...

I think I would be quick to blame the beef heart

Maybe the fry were picking at it because they were starving, no other choice?
Do fry that Small even have a digestive system to handle meat?

Your death rate sounds similar to batches when I was young to this and was trying to raise fry on artificial foods

All seemed well until die offs of 20% of the fish at a time... As they slowly starved and died in waves
A few would survive....the ones that ate the most

I do, for the fry only 24 hours approximately...and don't worry the only difference here is the I live 2 1/2 miles from a water treatment facility... keep growing those babes :)

Harry I'm sorry to let you down but its not the beef heart mix, it was my water as I live only 2 1/2 miles from a water treatment, facility just to add more info I'm raising two other batches from other pairs they are around 2 1/2 and the same thing happen to them fast breading and eating less food but not dead ones so that its telling me the my water was treat with more chemicals or higher amounts; the same happen to me last year lost 2 batches of fry around the same size that's why now i had place a lots of carbon in a filter to filter my water 24 hours before add it to my tanks..

The fry were eating flakes as well, plus my beef heart mix only consist with 30% of beef heart 70% are the rest of the components thanks for your opinion..

Harry, why do you choose to feed golden pearls? I'm just curious, I know you don't do it immediately, at around a month I start moving to other foods as well but it rapidly approaches a standard juvenile diet, FDBW, BH mix, bills BH flakes and the like. Ask ground pretty fine still but i'm just curious.

Conclusion:
I have talked with a couple discus experts/breeders, reported the tank parameters, food being feed, and every symptoms the fry suffered before they died. The conclusion based on their opinion was that it had to be something in the water on the final water change that did permanent damage to their gills.

Golden pearls are a good addition to the diet. They tend to stay in the water column longer than flake does so they can help transition fry from live to dry foods.

Hmmm I just haven't heard much positive with them but that's generally from people using them too early. Makes sense in principle, I just usually don't have any problems getting them onto dry foods, one day starvation at the most then they eat like pigs again lol. Maybe I'll play around with them a little next time I make an order from Ken.

I have had it happen to me to many times my friend. You know I live in a small town and I never know what they are doing with my water, but now I a very good filtration system for the water coming into my fish room thanks to Paul or pcsb23 here on SD, without a doubt an expert when it comes to water. As Josie said it was not your beef heart mix not IMO, I always have my fry on beef heart mix as soon as they will take it always by 3 weeks at the latest in most cases have them eating it just a little past a week and never had any bad side affects, in fact IMO the sooner you can get them on beef heart the better they really grow fast on it.
Well don't let this get you down, get another batch going its not to late.

The one thing that stands out to me in this thread is this here:

the same happen to me last year lost 2 batches of fry around the same size

This could possibly point to another possible cause......Were these fry in the 4-6 week range?

Rick

Keith Perkins

I thought the same thing after just reading that post Rick.

I started adding small (300-500 microns) GPs to the fry diet a while back basically for two reasons. The first was that ultimately you don't know what buyers are going to want to feed the fish. My thinking was the more variety I gave the fry/juvies the more likely whatever the buyers offered them to eat they would quickly accept. I have no idea if this is actually true, but I have had good portion of my buyers say with amazement that their fish will eat anything they throw in the tank. My theory might be right, or maybe the buyers just aren't use to really healthy discus that are eating machines. The second and bigger reason is it gives me a fall back food if I screw up a batch of bbs, like I did just yesterday morning. It's funny how they don't hatch very well when you forget the last step of putting the airline in the bottle. Dah.

I keep my fry with the parents longer than some and feed the parents beefheart through out, so they get beefheart whenever they're interested as well.

Best of luck getting another batch into the contest.

Very interesting. I am glad you chose to keep these. A big job that may bring a big reward. Good luck.

The red in the fins will most likely fade overtime and grow out (much like a spot on your fingernail does). What is very intriguing about these fish is not the red in the fins, but the developement of the red SS pattern coming in on the body region of some of the 14 bar offspring. Very nice indeed Arturo, stay on top of these guys you may have something here.

What are you feeding now?
