They have really grown and developed well. Almost 4" today and starting to color up nicely.

As I told you when I picked these up, I would be glad to grow some out for you brother. I have had these on a new food receipe that I wanted to experiment with. I am very pleased with their growth. The largest of the group is approaching 5". :) :)

Not to knock the quality of these fish as they are very nice fish, but to me they do not seem to have the typical straight lines that a typical large Piwowarski has but more of a broken pattern in the lower part of the fish. Am I correct on that observation?

If I remember correctly, and Harry can always comment, but I don't think he ever got any of the really straight line turqs from Alex. At least females. His males have pretty straight lines but the females don't. Luck of the draw really. Maybe thats why the striations are like that. To me they look great regardless but I see what you are saying.

I'd love to know what you are feeding as well Joe.

Matt is right.

I have one straight line female now, but these are from a broken pattern female

Regardless, from what I am seeing from others I have, they all seem to start like this
I think they are on par for their age. The piwows don't get full color until 14 to 16 months from what I am seeing
A few months before this, they don't even hardly have spots

They start spotted and the the lines start to run together, as some of those fish are showing on the top
It will be interesting to watch development!

I agree Harry,

From the ones I've grown-out they developed late. However, I did get many where spots did not connect striaght through as Bill mentioned. I've yet to see anyone of us besides Piwow himself breed true straight line RT's.
Correction...you guys because I have not formed a Piwow pair to date from my grow-outs.
Great job with these guys Harry.

Joe should get the kudos for those. They look very healthy

I'm interested to see if the spots run together. Even if it takes 8 more months to do so.
Unfortunately, I killed the 30 that I kept from that batch in my move to a new house. So, those are the oldest fry that I've got out there

I've only got about 30 2-3 month olders....the female keeps eating eggs/wrigglers of late

Ralph,

This is exactly what I was getting at. I was not putting down the fish but making an observation and think I those are some great looking fish that have been very well taken care of. My main point in making the observation is that everyone wants the strait line red turqs from Alex but how many people other than those that bought at about 6 inches have had luck with ending up with straight line turqs? None of the fry I got from Alex ever turned out like the jumbo females that I received from him. There is a mad rush to try and breed them here in the US but what is the % of straight line fry per spawn or is it something else that turns them into those straight line beauties that we all want? Like Ralph said I have never seen a straight line red turq. from Alex other than those that come from him as Large or Jumbos. Just my observation and wondering what you all think.

Thank you all for the nice comments. I am very happy with these fish. If I remember right, the parents were straight lined male and broken lined female. Harry, please correct me if I'm wrong. It seems like the straight line pattern is sought after the most. For me, that trait didn't come into play. I wanted the brilliant colors and possible adult size. So far they seem to be on track.

My routine is the same as others here and has been practiced for ages. Lots of food and w/c's. I got them from Harry at about nickle size. They were on BBS and golden pearls. I was able to get them on crushed flake in a day. A couple days later they accepted finely grated B/H mix. I housed them in a 10g...filled half way. 100% water change morning and night with aged and heater water.

At quarter size, I introduced them to crushed/pre-soaked Tetra Bits and Ken's Super Color Crumble #1. Two feeding before work in the AM. My wife would feed once mid-day. I would feed three to four times in the evening/night. At 50-cent size, 10g tank was filled and 50% w/c morning and night.

At two inches, I moved them to a 40g breeder filled half way. The diet now was B/H mix, pre-soaked un-crushed Tetra Bits, and Ken's Super Color Crumble #2. Mid day feeding sometimes as our schedules have changed. 50% water change morning and night. At 2-1/2-3" I filled the 40g up.

Currently they get B/H then Tetra Bits in the morning. B/H, Tetra Bits, and B/H at night. I do a 100% w/c every other day and siphon the waste as needed in between w/c's. Some have asked about my B/H receipe. I will PM to you. It's not anything top secret, but this thread has taken an interesting turn as it is.

Again, thank you all for the nice comments. I couldn't be happier with these fish.

Joe
