Hi!
Do any of you use the moon light bulbs at night with your discus tanks? I am going to replace my hood and lights on my 55 gallon and am trying to decide on the best affordable set up.
Thanks!

I do, and the discus love em.. The very best are the automatic light reduction to the moonlight phase. Go for it. Make em happy nighters.

They're pretty pricey thought, right?

Depending on what your looking for, some hoods have them with thier other lights.I found a one,48" with 3 T5's and moonlights, with seperate timers in the $100 range.Haven't found it again, lol, but worth looking on e-bay.

kens fish had some for about 80.00 (i think) 2 t-5 ho bulbs plus 4 or 6 blue led for night viewing. its what i'm using on my 125 gal but the fixture is designed for a 48" tank

just make sure you get the freshwater fixture not the reef

If I didnt spend so much damn money on all the breeding and raising crap I have then Id probably consider it. I have LED moonlights on two tanks and the discus and I both like them, at least thats what they told me (I listen like Pat says). All in all my only real concern since I have a fish room and breed but need to be in there at night a lot is a system that keeps the fish from spooking. The tanks that dont have moonlight LED fixtures have night lights (blue) near them so that they dont spook if I walk into the room when its "dark". Eventually yes, all of my tanks will probably be converted to blue moonlight in the evening for a few hours to widen the time I can access the room without poor reactions from the fish, but for a whole fish room this gets pricey quick, and its just not a big priority in my situation. Little kiddy night lights do the trick.

$60.00 I especially like it because each bulb has it's own switch, so you can adjust the light levels.

Thanks so much to you all for your input! dprais1 - loving Kens Fish! Great deals for sure. I think I'm going to get a heater from him as well. Anyone have any preferences on any of these? I can't insert the links yet since I don't have 10 posts yet. 55 gallon tank.
Thanks!

I dislike all of those heaters. I use Aqueon Pro heaters in all my tanks, jeager heaters if I need to get the temp above 88 degrees. Ive had piss poor luck with most of the rest.... Failures to include, electrical short, glass breakage, inability to heat well withing their wattage range, electrical shock (dead fish)... A good heater is worth 10,000 words... And getting harder and harder to find honestly. But the aqueon pro heaters as a whole have impressed me, the thermostats on them are awesome, they are almost indestructable, they seem to last a really long time. Ive had ONE with a problem, lemon issue out of the box, took it back and never a problem since.

I ended up going with the 200w Jeager from F&S. I will keep the Aqueons in mind if I need to get another.....thanks DiscusDrew!!

Well thats acceptable, jeager heaters are good, they have just changed their design as well and seem to not be the same as they used to. Still better than others and I still use them when needed.

I have seen some mention about heater guards........needing them so the Discus don't get stuck. Are they necessary?
