I have some tanks at 86, and I age my water.... So I probably COULD but I'll never take that risk, just a personal preference. FYI, I don't run many tanks that hot, usually around 84, I do it with youngsters and if there are issues in the tank though.

I know the issue is about O2. Safe in too large a dose will temporarly reduce O2 in the tank and higher temps also reduce the amount of dissolved O2. I think if you are running enough O2 into the tank I would use the full dose of Safe as if the temp was below 86 and just keep an eye on the fish. At least that way you will know that you have treated the chemicals in the water properly.

I have always done a full dose was just curious what everyone else does, this brings up another question, should I turn my temp down to 84° or is it better at 86° for grow outs??

It should always be at least 82. If you have wilds it needs to be higher or if you need to speed up their metabolism. Keep in mind that higher temps also cause bacterial illness to reproduce more quickly. I keep mine at 82-83.

Bill, are you sure about more chlorine in your water in the Winter? I live in NYC and they put more chlorine in the water in the Summer bccause of higher temps and more sunlight causes algae and bacteria to multiply.

I live in NYC and they put more chlorine in the water in the Summer bccause of higher temps and more sunlight causes algae and bacteria to multiply. When the lake freeze's past,I'll call them the pump stations, like in a pond, gasses can't disapate as well. You can actually smell it sometimes.I hear you abut the summer',must be were the stations are located. They use special ice boats to break it up around them, but not 100%.
