I am setting up a 100G discus tank with a sump. The tank will have low light/tech plants (java fern, anubias and crypts). I would like to identify the turnover rate I should achieve. I've read posts and articles which vary. Some say 5, some say 10 and others 15 times the tank volume per hour.

What are your opinions on this?

thanks

I always shoot for 6 times at the very least

Is there any way to determine how much bioload the filter can handle? Is it related to the turnover? I guess the longer the water column is exposed to bacteria, better biological filtration?

The more surface area on the filter media the more bacteria will grow.

if you want higher water clarity then you need more gph going through the sump, or filter mat. For biological reason then 6x is ideal; but then you are going to look at the water column and said "darn it, I am going to buy a much bigger pump". Use filter sock or some sort of insertable/removable filter mat for pre-filtering.

6-10x. and you want the drain to be a little bit bigger then return. so if you have a 1 inch drain you want a 3/4 return.

I have a turnover rate of about 12X and it keeps the water column pretty clear going through a filter sock. if you use a high turnover rate, you may also think about splitting the return into 2 or three to keep current low (I use 2 returns and little current caused)
