View Full Version : Batch 2 2009 contest fish(apd) x F1 (ogon yellow white x ARSG)

Pair is one of my F1's (albino Red Spotted Green x Ogon Yellow white) x one of the 2009 contest fish purchased from Chad Hughes. Be interesting if these make it, as I not only can document the developement of the fry, but the parents as well. There are about as many fry on the other side of the mother and I apologize for the color, I played around with it to display the fry a bit better. Interesting that 90% of the fry are attached to the albino parent.

http://s567.photobucket.com/albums/ss118/nc0gnet0/batch2b.jpg

Dad is showing a lot of pepper as he has darkened up for the fry. Typically he shows virtually no pepper. There should be 50% albino's in this group, but to hard to tell at this stage. Here are some better pictures of the parents:

Should be an interesting batch, ill be following this one, at some point hopefully I can learn some from you about the albino gene and start playing around in that direction. Dad really darkened up for the fry there, I find that a very unique aspect of pigeon breeding.

http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss118/nc0gnet0/week2batch2.jpg

Quite the assortment of fry these two have thrown. Although it doesn't show in the pictures I am guess at least 4 maybe 6 types of fry ranging from Pb's to albino's to white/yellows to even what I think (hard to tell at this stage) might be some non-pb's. My guess at this stage is that the 2009 contest fish were Pb crosses heterozygous-only one pb gene).

This picture also reminds me that I need to stop procratinating and put a background on that tank ;)

I am going to grab my SLR and try to take some better pictures of the fry to show the differences in types later hopefully.

Super nice! Crazy how much Dad changed after the spawn and fry rearing. You did a phenomenal job growing him out. Such a wide range of fry as you mentioned there were some non-pb and non-albino. Maybe RSG? Will be quite the story to watch them develop out!

Thanks Eddie! Admittedly Dad wasn't my first choice to breed with this female, but she has proven to be most difficult to force pair with another male APD I had selected for her. I liked the novelty of having a representative of the 2009 contest in this contest, so I allowed her to choose her mate. At least he does have some yellow in his genetics so it could be interesting to see what kind of fry they throw.

Looking for food:

http://youtu.be/hddtm_a0MP4

Currently getting fed Al's FDBW's as a staple(two feedings) Super beaf heart flake (1x), cobalt Flake (1x) and some NLS growth pellerts intermittantly. Feedings are typically at 6:30 am, 4:15 pm, 7:30 pm, and 11:00 pm. Two 60-80 % water changes a day, one at 5:15 pm and one at 11:00 pm. I have one HOB filter and one sponge filter in the tank. temperature is set to 82.5. I use 100 % RO water with just enough RO waste water to bring my TDS up to around 70 ppm. PH is typically at or about 7.6-7.8, but I honestly don't monitor this much at all.

Getting fed Al's Freeze Dried Black Worms ran through a coffee grinder:

I apologize for the late update, but photobucket has been having some real issues of late and I could not upload these friday. Starting to see some difference in size, but this is mainly due to the fact I have three-five different types of offspring from this cross. Different strains grow at different rates and as you can see the pigeon bloods seem to be outpacing the browns. Currently down to 30 fry (I think, hard to get a good count on these little guys).

I am liking this batch, there might be a few very interesting offspring resulting from this cross. I have some yellow/orange fry, some light yellow fry, some brown based fry that are starting to show yellow (?), and a 50-50 mix of pb to non pb fry (this tells me that the 2009 contest albino does not have any pigeon blood genes. It is going to be hard to choose 8 from this batch to move forward for the contest with so many different types.

A little slower growth on this pair that I attribute to genetics. It's going to be hard to select 8 to work with do to the different and various types this pair produced......open for suggestions? They are feasting on Bill's (inland empire discus) super beafheart flake with pro-growth. I tried to get some pictures without food but they were to spastic and would'nt stop begging for food which doesn't make for good pics.

Yup, that is a solid yellow (at least to this point). Pity its the smallest of the batch, but I kept it do to the fact it was the only one of it's type.

I have 2 in the batch I got from you, 1 is totally clean and the other has faint color at the tip of its fins, not sure if they're from this pair or not. I gotta say... the mutts are much more fun to watch develop than the "purebreds" :)

Very interesting and impressive cross you have done Rick :D hard to tell from the pictures just curious what is the % of albinos you got from this cross? just want to see how the theories work in practice for albino x intermediate. Thanks.

Xiaofei,

It depends on how you look at it. The theories work out perfectly when you study the fry on the cone. Unfortunatly, survivability of the albino's when competing against the non-albino's at an early age skews the results considerably.

Eddie,

My hopes are that the fish we are talking about is a male, in which case I will breed it back to the mother. This should give me a higher percentage of the phenotypes like the one you like. From there I will choose the best ones and then try to "fix" the type.

Thanks! I find it interesting to see how much the trailers have grown on the one fish in just the last 6-7 weeks. I should have fanned them out to add another 1" to the TL of the fish lol.

The one with the trailers Rick looks like a fish to take to NADA. Looks great.

Thanks Jeff, he's has a bit more growing to do, but his father kept right on growing up to 8" albeit slowly (took two years). It is however my favorite fish of my groups. Perhaps if he reaches the 7" TL mark by Nada I might consider it as an entry at least for the homebred division (?). I just wish the fish had a red eye, but that is something to work on in future generations, as I do have plans to do so with this phenotype.
